Hendrick Drops the Soft Landing Album

Hendrick, a singer-songwriter from Vancouver Island, carves out a space somewhere between indie-folk intimacy and conversational, speak-sung storytelling. His latest release, Soft Landing, is a sprawling fourteen-track collection that leans heavily on the intricate guitar work of classical guitarist Scott Cameron, whose playing serves as the album’s central force. The arrangements are understated, often hushed, but Cameron’s technique adds a layer of complexity that keeps things from feeling too weightless.

The album moves through different shades of energy, though even its more animated moments maintain a subdued, acoustic-driven quality. There’s a warmth to the performances, a sense of looseness that makes it feel like you’re sitting in the room with them. Hendrick’s vocals are gentle and unassuming—sometimes to a fault. There are moments where the delivery feels too restrained, almost hesitant, but when it clicks, it adds to the album’s reflective nature.

Some of the strongest moments come when the duo lean into texture and movement. "Deep Feeling Man" stands out as the clear highlight, weaving Latin rhythms into their folk framework with effortless fluidity. "Viola Visits" and "I'm Not Sorry" also bring welcome variation, offering some of the album’s most engaging melodies.

Production-wise, Soft Landing falls on the slightly lo-fi end of the spectrum. The guitars sound crisp and organic, but the occasional use of synthetic strings I felt indifferent towards. At fourteen songs, the album feels longer than it needs to be—ten tracks might have landed with more impact.

Soft Landing isn’t a perfect record, but it has a quiet charm. The melodies are well-crafted, and the guitar work is consistently impressive, elevating even the most unassuming moments. It’s the kind of album that rewards close listening, even if it doesn’t demand it.
