A blistering new release from HC3 delivers a particular breed of heaviness with deepening riffs and unique time signatures that come together to create this massive approach that gives off such sonic presence, along with this almost anthemic powerhouse of a soundscape that starts building beneath everything.
"The Witch" is not a single that just has one thing going for it.
The guitar work is outstanding throughout the entire track. However, it's the drumming that makes the unique time signature really fall into place the way that it does.
The drummer is absolutely killer. He's able to pull this riff together with the guitarists so that it comes through with such a heavy-handed punch, and it was brilliantly worked out and feels ultra-tight.
As this is happening, the song itself has these textures and layers that start building beneath the guitar work, and this starts to drive the song into a different place.
There's another layer of melody that comes right in with the main heavy riff as well, and right away, you can start getting a feel for the layers that are going to start happening throughout the track.
One of the things I love about this track is the fact that throughout these great time signatures and intense, deep riffs, you have this melodic vocal that still comes out powerful, but the focus is more on these amazing melodies that stay embedded in your brain for hours after you've listened to the track.
The vocals, along with the rest of the track, only get bigger during these sorts of epic choruses, which come through like closed-fisted anthems, and the combination of edginess and melody really makes this track work.
You also get little hints of grunge or sort of 90s underground alternative rock with some harmonics that are performed on the guitar, and the post-chorus gives you the sense that there are a slew of influences that really come into play when you put everyone in this band together.
I can definitely hear that in the last part of the chorus and in the post-chorus. The last part of the course has a rebellious belting vocal, and this is where the guitars do the harmonic section, and it all makes me think of bands like Stabbing Westward, for example.
I love that feeling because they hit the right aesthetic at those sections. They actually gave me a little bout of nostalgia.
Obviously, I love that as well. The way that they bring together the newer, fresher, uniquely placed riffs and soundscapes, textures, and tones with that classic, almost 90s old rock feel is borderline genius.
This is a massive song from start to finish, and along with it comes a music video that really embodies some of the band's presence and energy.
The video is a combination of this sort of wild post-apocalyptic-looking setting and the band just rocking out in that environment. They're knee-deep in water, everything is sort of brutalized and falling apart, and there's an almost science fiction undertone to it all.
For some reason, this fits the track perfectly.
The energy levels of the entire performance are really where it's at here. Yes, as I mentioned, it's the timing of the riffs and how the drumming comes across that really builds the song itself, but the way the energy comes together between the members of the band is what pushes things forward.
It gives you the feeling of getting put right there in the moment, almost like a live performance would.
You could sense a particular kind of synergism, almost like they performed some of the main parts live on the floor, and everyone involved with feeding off of each other the entire time.
There was definitely a lot of attention to detail when it came to the arrangement and how those riffs would come together with all the timings and outside-the-box approaches, but there was also attention to detail in the tones of those guitars and the mix of how the drums cut through everything with a perfect heaviness.
This was very well thought out from start to finish, but it's got a lot of heart too.
Everyone in this band has a real love for their craft, and when I say that, I don't just mean playing their instruments or singing, I mean writing songs together that have a heavy-handed impact and a cutting-edge kind of sound while still blending some of those influences they grew up on.
None of this was by accident. This was all done purposely, and they did a great job bringing those elements together to create something that's got its own atmosphere and slight haunt in its underbelly.
This was a fist-in-the-air banger of a single, and I certainly suggest checking this one out now, especially if you love heavy music of almost any kind.
Again, bringing the old and new school elements together was just a genius move, and they did it seamlessly, which is probably the most impressive part.
Everyone comes in with an intensity in their energies, and that's what lets the song thrive as well.
One of the best ways to check this out is by watching the video first, so we've taken the liberty of embedding that below. Do yourself a favor, and listen to it loud.
If you're watching it on a computer, at least put headphones on and turn it up. There's no point listening to a track this heavy at a low volume. Trust me.
Don't forget where you heard this first.
