A new single release from Frederick James delivers a very honest approach to storytelling from a personal perspective, but one I feel like a lot of people can relate to, simply because of how upfront and straightforward he articulates his lyrics.
This is a single that doesn't really hold a lot back but also keeps things in a bare-bones kind of format in terms of those lyrics as well. They're not stripped down, but they do focus on the struggles you may run into as a person. It's something that I feel like we all need.
A lot of us need songs that let us feel like we're not really alone in certain kinds of struggles, whether they be outward or inward.
This song is one of those moments. It pinpoints the feeling of almost hopelessness, but being able to find the strength to get past it.
The single is about getting knocked down, but standing back up. Fighting your way through whatever is going on and moving forward.
"Walking Through Hell" is a perfect title for the track because, as I just mentioned, when you feel like you're walking through hell, keep moving forward. That's what it's all about, and I feel like he's really pinpointed that sentiment with a beautiful approach.
The song itself balances folk with hints of Americana, loads of warmth, and its tonalities, including some amazing guitar work that has a way of wrapping itself around you and keeping you right where it wants to.
The vocals follow suit but have a little bit more power to them. They showcase the emotional backbone that comes along with sentiments like this one.
Being able to understand that you've got to get through something is one thing. Being able to get through it is another. There's a lot of emotion involved in having to push through certain kinds of scenarios, struggles, or issues.
Sometimes you need a little bit of a push to get past certain things.
The song manages to really articulate this while also capturing such an amazing aesthetic musically, that it all falls together almost like puzzle pieces.
You can hear a lot of classic influences from rock, folk, and even elements of southern-toned artists, including Americana, and of course, country music.
I like this because I feel like that hint of southern undertone really helps the warmth of the song come through. It's not exactly light-hearted, but it does have that vibe going as well.
The message is there, loud and clear, or at least that's how I interpreted the song. Others may take it a little differently when they hear it, but for me, the sentiment was completely loud and clear.
The way the music of it all comes together, the instrumentation, the warmth, the tones of everything, the layers, it all feels sort of welcoming in a strange sense. It's not over the top emotionally. The music lets it come through with a little hint of that light-hearted feel, not to take it too seriously, but just to understand the message.
For me, the whole thing was super welcoming, and I feel like that dynamic balance between the instruments and the performances was really nailed.
You can tell this was pulled from some real place. It's easy to listen to the song and hear that authenticity behind it all.
He obviously went through something and got past it, so now he wanted to share, not just the feeling of getting past it, but the understanding that you can get back up, and you can push through.
You need to keep walking.
As I mentioned before, I feel like a lot of us need songs like this at certain parts of our lives. Everyone you meet is going through something. Whether or not that's what you see or hear on the outside, I guarantee you something is going on behind closed doors or with their inner struggles.
When you hear a song like this, you do feel a little bit less alone. Just the understanding that someone else gets it is a really important thing, and that's part of what makes the song impactful and a bit powerful.
If you can reach people with this message, then he's done his job. And he's done it well.
Again, it's not exactly for everybody. It was written for him. He wrote it for himself, but he wanted that message to be heard.
It's the message and how it's delivered that affects everyone else.
The song has a great sort of stomp to it as well. There's a lot of kick drum stomping that drives the track, giving it extra energy and force, along with beautiful piano work that has a strange way of putting you right there with the song.
It's got this beautiful, almost live performance style aesthetic and energy that draws you in and keeps you there.
The whole thing was very beautifully done, and everything felt amazing, so I suggest listening to this one with headphones on, because then you can soak in all of these layers of textures and emotion that come through the way it was meant to be heard.
It's almost like a soft-bellied anthem. One that a lot of us will completely relate to and connect with.
So, have a listen to this track now and most certainly don't forget where you heard it first.
