A fresh new release from Felino brings out a very cinematic but driving synth-pop tonality that blends vintage and old school styles with a newer approach, and all the while gives an atmosphere all its own with ambient underbellies and a soundscape that you can easily get engulfed in.
"Asteroid" wastes very little time delivering that soundscape with amazing synth pads that let you drift alongside them, with vocals reminiscent of artists like Tears for Fears, bringing that classic aesthetic that I mentioned earlier.
You can tell there was a lot of thought and attention to detail during the creation of the song, and a lot of that attention went towards the tones of the instruments.
The synths and keys were chosen precisely so that the song could have the kind of feel that it does.
I found it alluring right from the start, and how the song grows really lets it unfold in a wonderful way, keeping your attention, and still giving you that almost cinematic drive that it started off with.
Along with those amazing synths, you have some great guitar work here that brings almost post-punk elements to the table, and I love that factor too, because I didn't really expect it at first.
You can tell that there is actually a slew of influences that inspire songs like this, and he did an amazing job of bringing all those influences to create something that has its own vibe.
Layers of synths come into play, giving more and more depth and expansive sounds, and some of these notes and textures float through the songs' ether and create something dreamy.
Now, a lot of people would actually call this dream pop, and I would agree to an extent. There is a heavy dream pop element to it, and that comes from those vast synthesizers, but there's also a great pop overcoat that has a bit more of a drive due to the beats and the vocals.
The combination of those two elements alone creates a unique feel, but the guitars add that extra layer and different texture to the song as well, so it all has something that is almost nostalgic but new at the same time.
You also have this classic bass line that runs through the track, and I can't actually tell if that's from a bass guitar or if it's from a synthesizer as well, but either way, it helps the drive of the track and adds a bit of boppiness and its undertone.
The vocals give that classic sort of deep tone, and it works perfectly with a track like this because of the textures of everything. The way that the natural and digital elements come together throughout this track is something that feels natural and gives a song a sort of forward-moving flow.
I don't always talk about the mix of a track; however, with this song, I feel like it's so important because the aesthetic of it all comes together with a good mix.
I'm not sure if the artist himself was the one who mixed the song, but it was mixed incredibly well with such an amazing and natural feeling balance to everything.
No elements of the song are overpowering or drown out other instruments.
All of it has a beautiful balance, but it still keeps the drive and character, personality, and slightly vibrant approach very evident.
I found it cool how it kept both the color and the edginess together. Bringing the excitable aspects along with the smooth and dreamy ones is not something easily accomplished.
This was super fun and I absolutely loved it because I grew up with this kind of stuff and I can tell you Felino certainly nailed that aesthetic so well that it did indeed give me bouts of nostalgia constantly.
Upon listening to the single, I took a bit of a deep dive into the artist's back catalog, and I'm glad I did because some great tracks have been released, and each one has a bit of a different feel to it.
There's stuff that doesn't even touch on dream pop, but more of a refreshing Indie pop tone.
There's actually plenty to soak in and I feel like "Asteroid" is a great track to start off with because although it speaks for itself, stands on its own two legs as a single, and has its own aesthetic, it's still boasts some of the Staples you will hear in other tracks released from Felino.
At any rate, take a dive into this right now and see what it does for you because I'm sure you will end up drifting right alongside this dreamy and cinematic single.
Remember where you heard it first.
