A freshly released EP from ChannelChanger brings together a rock soiree with fuzz-toned and garage soundscapes and dynamics along with outstanding and electric energy that create these atmospheres and jams that you end up getting pulled into because they blend this raw energy with this colorful approach and the songs are instrumental but riddled with loads of hooks coming from those guitars on a non-stop basis and so you end up really having those hooks bounce around in your brain for quite some time.
The I can't stop sweating EP consists of three tracks. Together they're just over 10 minutes long but believe me when I tell you, as you listen to the record unfold you start getting pulled into this whole other world. It's built off of really clever but still sort of loose math and garage-influence approaches with elements of jazz in their undertones that make them really cool.
One of my favorite things about this record in particular is the energy level, indeed. The energy feels like it's completely done live on the floor and the performance is captured in one shot and this gives you an authentic kind of feel and that high octane and sort of on the edge, almost improvised, style.
Now, having said that I know that this wasn't improvised because there are a lot of great hooks and the songs have arrangements but they're not your standard, cookie-cutter style arrangements whatsoever however, they do fit together really well.
These songs are built off the ability to create music with fewer walls built around it. The guitar work is so good and there are surprises around the corners, but the thing is, these three songs fit together like puzzle pieces and if you listen to the whole EP then the pieces all come together to create one big song in my opinion.
I really do feel like this is the kind of record that is meant to be listened to as one big song and maybe it was even written that way. I'm not sure of course I wasn't there. However, it feels that way to me and I love that approach because you get a bit of an experience by listening to the whole thing together.
Again, the guitar work is very in-your-face and a bit avant-garde in the approach. There are elements of that math rock with some of the riffs and a lot of it is done with great precision but still has that little bit of looseness that builds on that whole garage fuzz tone aspect of it so the combination of the tightness in the riffs and the looseness of the tone make this record alive and breathing.
When you listen to the record you can tell it was an absolute blast to record. That energy and vibe emanates from this music the entire time and one of the things I have to touch on with this record is the drumming.
The drum performance across the board is outstanding in this to me is what blends in some of that jazz undertone because the time signatures and changes throughout the record are killer.
This is also where those surprises around the corners come in as well. Sometimes those times signatures just change on the spot and all of a sudden you have this whole different rhythm that came into play, but these guys knew exactly what they were doing and how to bring that back into its original form in the end as well.
The aesthetic of this record feels like something you hear on a vinyl that you picked up from an underground record shop in the mid-90s and this to me is almost nostalgic in a strange sense.
The tone, approach, and arrangements of these songs were done with so much attention to detail in a certain sense but yet there is a freeing sense throughout it. Again, this definitely comes from the fact that this is a record that doesn't have those walls built around it and isn't made specifically to conform to any kind of societal opinion of genre.
We need more music like this. We need it now because this is the perfect time for this kind of fun, colorful, intricate, but still a bit loose, fuzz-tone garage and math rock to come forth.
To me, this record speaks volumes for this band, and you should listen to it all the way through because then you will get the full understanding, and the pieces come together perfectly.
For guitar players, you're going to love this absolutely. For people that aren't actual musicians, you'll still love this, especially if you're into those kinds of genres because these guys take things to a great level and still don't push things over the top. Nothing's overdone. Everything is just dynamically really balanced and feels good to listen to.
Dive into this record as soon as you can and remember where you heard it first.
