A heartwarming new single from Anika Louise delivers a very welcoming breed of honesty and storytelling in the form of a summer feeling contemporary folk-pop single, and this track boasts such beautiful lyrics that you get caught up in them because of the story being told.
"Pearl" is a song about Anika's Great Nana, Pearl, and she tells stories from her perspective. You can follow along with some of the life of Pearl told by Anika, which was so unique and touching. It's something that made her driven enough to write a song.
Just the fact that Great Nanna Pearl had such an impact on her is wonderful. Maybe she heard other family members tell stories about her, maybe she heard stories from Pearl herself.
Either way, you're getting a piece of pearl with this song, and I think that was the whole point. She wanted to express how great and impactful someone's life can be on their family, and the expression of how she thinks about Pearl now, as she watches her family play ball in the backyard, is amazing.
The way that she words everything lyrically is brilliant. It tells the story of Pearl to an extent, but also tells a little bit of Anika's story as well.
The song is cinematically colorful in a sense. I think that's because it's got a lot of emotion embedded in it just naturally. It is an emotional song simply because it's written about a loved one.
The song itself musically is bright and has that folk backing. Acoustic guitars, pianos, live percussion, and more, along with these wash and beautifully expressed vocals.
The singing on this track is just gorgeous. I like when she has one track during the verses so you can hear the lyrics and soak them in because that's what it's all about, but when it gets to the choruses and the bigger moments of the song, she harmonizes and there's two three or maybe even four tracks sounds gorgeous because it adds such a thickness to the song.
There's so much texture to soak in. Layers of vocals, the tone of the guitars and piano, everything is so warm, and because of that, you connect with the sentiment of the song even more.
The musical approach of this song absolutely complements what it's about. I feel like there was a lot of attention to that sort of detail, but I also feel like it's something that came to Anika naturally as well.
When you listen to the song, you kind of get the feeling she wrote it herself with an acoustic guitar and her vocals to start with. Stripped down and focused on telling Pearl's story while making sure she keeps her own life and self-involved as well.
The song displays a wonderful presence as an artist, perfect energy, and a very well-produced approach. A lot is going on. As I mentioned earlier, there are a lot of textures and layers between the guitars, piano, vocals, percussion, and everything else.
Because there's so much going on and so many layers happening, the production is big, especially when she wants to bring in those outstanding vocal harmonies that build so much color into the song.
So, all in all, we have a very well-written and performed, warm and sentimental single that is an old love letter to Great Nanna Pearl.
If only we can all be lucky enough to have our generational relatives write songs about us one day.
I think this was packed to the brim with heart, and that came through from all avenues. Musically, lyrically, and vocally, it all had plenty of heart and love.
Check this song out and enjoy it. There's a lot to drink in with this single, and if you read this first and know what it's about before you listen, to me, it's even better.
Remember where you heard it first.
