A new single release from Topps creates a familiar but bright and colorful dance pop vibe that touches on R&B at times but keeps to its danceable energy and approach with an upswing beat and a relatability that brings us into a memorable chorus that sticks in your head for days on end.
"Say Yes or Say No" is endlessly fun and comes through with a lot of character and gusto that create an atmosphere that has a way of wrapping itself around you and keeping you right where it wants you.
This track brings elements of classic dance vibes but also hence towards a newer feel while creating a staple sound that's unique to himself.
I think this track was built to be a big pop single and it really works for that matter.
The track comes off charming and bright with subtle dynamic elements that make it catchy and fun, but it also has a little bit of a serious side to it as well because of the topic.
Topps has a wonderful way of showcasing his chops in terms of arrangement and songwriting because this single has a youthful undertone but also some maturity as well.
All the while, you're getting a track that has a solid Groove and automatically makes your butt start shaking in your seat.
I mean, this is a dance song after all. You want to get up and dance around the living room while you sing along to that chorus.
He also has an amazing ability to dig that chorus in but in a roundabout way so that when the song is over, you're humming that melody in your head and the only way to satiate it is to play the song again.
Now that's what I call smart songwriting.
There is definitely a lot of attention to detail in the way that the instrumentation builds and the way that the percussion and beats build as well along with how the vocals are performed.
Everything about this track comes into play dynamically.
This is a straightforward dance pop banger, and it has a little bit of a nostalgic tonality to it that makes it even more welcoming.
But what does this song mean to the artist himself?
We decided to have a sit-down with Topps to find out more of where this song actually came from and what might be coming up next for the artist.
Here's what happened.
Buzz Slayers: Okay, let's start with "Say Yes or Say No"! This single had this driving pop house feel and a radio and club vibe! How did this track come about?
Thank you for the kind words about the song! I wanted to create a different sound & try out a different genre to what I had done before on my previous songs which were Afro beats and hip hop. I also wanted to create a song that everyone could relate to, that was fun, high energy & had a good vibe to it.
Buzz Slayers: How did this all start for you musically?
Well, my father was in a reggae Band called Beshara , so music was always around me when I was younger! I was doing other things in entertainment like acting & presenting beforehand, so it was always natural that I was going to go into music eventually!
Buzz Slayers: What kind of things really inspire songs for you?
I like to write songs & talk about topics that people can relate to because that way everyone can get involved with the song and feel apart of it.
Buzz Slayers: This song has some great styles combinations on it! Can you give us some of your biggest influences musically?
I do like to listen to a wide variety of artists such as Becky Hill, Chris Brown, Boys 2 Men, Ray Beshara as well as many others. I feel like this helps me come up with different melodies and song idea’s because I am listening to different artists all the time.
Buzz Slayers: What are you doing when you're NOT working on music?
I’ve done some acting work for BBC Doctors & BBC Line of Duty. I am a massive Arsenal fan, so I do like to watch English football/ Soccer! I also have been a big WWE wrestling fan since I was a kid so that is something else I do like to watch! The goal is to definitely work with Arsenal & WWE in a music sense also! I am also a regular contributor to BBC Radio Derby so you can listen to me live on there every month!
Buzz Slayers: Who's in your headphones right now?
I am actually listening to some unreleased songs from myself that should be coming out very soon.
Buzz Slayers: Are you doing any live performances right now?
My manager is in talks to get some live performances very soon so watch this space!
Buzz Slayers: Did you record yourself or hit a big studio for this?
I do the recording all myself at the minute, but the goal is to definitely travel the world and produce songs in different studios for sure.
Buzz Slayers: What can your fans expect from you in the near future?
They can expect more dance songs talking about topics that they can relate to and that they can play everywhere they go & enjoy listening to.
Buzz Slayers: Before we go, what would you like to say to fans of the music?
Just a massive thank you to my fans & to keep streaming the songs & watching the videos. More music will be coming from me very soon so keep supporting!
