A new single release from Stephan Folkes delivers a unique approach to blending pop, R&B, and a sentiment that a lot of us can relate to. The song is loaded with personality and has a very particular way of blending tonality is to create an atmosphere that's all its own.
"Say It Like You Mean It" is a track that definitely feels personal and certainly comes from an authentic place, which is something that builds the character behind the song even more and lets you get more attached to it.
This is a song that speaks truths about relationships and the mazes of a dating scene, if you will. At least, that's how I took it. However, it can be taken differently depending on who's listening.
The track takes this R&B element, especially vocally, and blends it in with a smooth underbelly, and the production of the whole thing is beautifully done because it has that subtlety to it, but it also provides a little bit of edginess at the same time.
It is very unique in that sense, and the vocal approach is really what hooks you.
The vocal pitch of this track is what makes it addictive in a sense. It's got this particular tonality to it, and when you hear it, you'll know exactly what I mean.
The hook of the track is what grabs you, and this chorus is something that sticks in your head for hours or even days after the song has ended. The only way to say she ate this is to go and listen to the track again.
One of the things I love about this song is how it balances not only dynamics and tonalities, but also its positive and negative energy.
You can hear the major notes floating into minor notes at certain sections of the track between the choruses and the verses, and it's something that I find really enticing and alluring.
This track was built on honesty and has fewer boundaries than you may be used to, which I find refreshing, to be honest.
I can honestly say that this is a track unlike many you've heard before, genuine, lush, and full-bodied, but also radio-friendly in a sense.
Again, that hook sticks with you and the track makes for an amazing single but also bends genres, so it's definitely got an outside-the-box element to it, but I feel like that's part of its appeal.
I loved how it all came together and how, when the song is over, you find yourself singing that hook in your head or even out loud.
A really brilliantly and intricately woven song that has an authenticity in its underbelly and a rich tone that becomes quickly addictive. You should certainly check this track out as soon as you can.
Upon listening to this song, we decided we wanted to have a chat with Stephan so we can find out more about where this came from and what might be next for the artist.
Here's what happened.
Buzz Slayers: Let's talk about "Say It Like You Mean It"! This was such a well performed track with a unique vocal approach and an R&B undertone!! Where did this track come from?
A: I let my instincts guide me during my creative process. Say it like you mean it is my debut Single, and it conveys the importance of valuing one’s time and energy. The song highlights self-worth and encourages listeners to learn to read between the lines, recognizing that not all communication is direct. In fact, about 90% of communication is nonverbal and/or indirect. As a man, I’ve experienced situations where I pursued someone despite subtle signs they weren’t interested, and it left me hurt. I believe this song will resonate with many, especially those who’ve experienced similar situations. My message to listeners is while a smart person learns from their own mistakes, a wise person learns from the mistakes of others.
Buzz Slayers: I'm hearing a few different approaches to this song! Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
A: I’m glad you asked this question!! For me, the most influential Music and Artists came from the 1960s &, especially the 1980s. Although these eras were before my time, their impact is undeniable and continues to inspire Artists like myself today. What I admire most is how those Artists took creative risks and trusted their instincts—an approach I’ve adopted in my own work. While I don’t exactly aspire to match their legacy, even reaching a fraction of their level would be an honour. This influence sets me apart from many contemporary Artists, helping to shape a distinct sound and Brand identity.
Listeners often compare my vocals to icons like Prince, the Bee Gees, Michael Jackson, and George Michael. Billie Eilish is another key influence—not only do I appreciate her sound, but as a contemporary Artist, she represents a bridge between legacy and current relevance. When people explore a new Artist, understanding their inspirations offers insight into their creative DNA and helps assess their potential. If those inspirations resonate, it can create a deeper connection In many ways, my Music serves as a tribute to the legends who’ve shaped me—musically and personally.
Buzz Slayers: Can you tell us about your cousin Deyaz, the UK artist?
A. Deyaz is my cousin and an Independent artist from the UK. Although we no longer communicate—largely due to him distancing himself from most of the family, except his mother, I like to call this phenomenon I’ve made it syndrome. He has achieved success early on, especially he initially got signed at least twice without a Music buzz. To me, Deyaz is an Industry plant. He got very lucky as Deyaz does look very marketable!! I’m confident Deyaz couldn’t create a Music buzz without a Label (like myself) & get signed.
He once told me he’s not a "Singer" and that he relies on Auto-tune during his live performances. Music never really has been about talent, it’s more about who’s very Marketable/Brand & who’s a safer investment for Record labels to make money. I remember seeing a special group on Deyaz’s Instagram (before he blocked me) called "Deyaz’s Family" for his fans. I found it pretty ironic, considering how he treats his actual Blood relatives. Truth is, Deyaz isn’t a very sincere person.
Nevertheless, it’s unfortunate how things unfolded, as some people in the family who have supported him have been cut off. This behaviour isn’t reflective on how he was raised & he does struggle with addiction: Alcohol and Drugs. He has a baby & a girlfriend who’s keeping things together!! It’s a sad reality, but I guess it’s "natural selection". Although Deyaz and I were supposed to collaborate at one point, that never materialized, he chose to work with his friend Jessie Reyez and they’re very cosy together!!
Musically, the people who have helped me out the most are not related to me. Family these days for most part, doesn’t mean anything. I remember a time when Deyaz asked me to take him to the Hospital, he came to my Mum’s House in distress late at night, I was worried something had happened to him. I was prepared to have a fight with anyone who hurt him. Deyaz told me that he’s so called Bandmates were stealing his Clothes. I told him “they’re not your Bandmates and you should go solo”. He even faced conflict within his own immediate Family, with his brother punching him in his Face for him being “ungrateful & overly-selfish”. It seems like a lot of what has happened stems from Deyaz’s deeper personal issues.
For me, any setbacks in my life only fuels my determination to stay positive, grow, and persevere. I’m committed to never losing sight of my Brand/identity, even as I gain recognition in the Music industry. I’ve seen how other Artists have been affected by success in unhealthy ways, and I won’t let that happen to me. On a lighter note, I’ve recently had discussions with Nines’ (UK Rapper) Music manager, and I’m hopeful that something will come from it. Only time will tell…
Buzz Slayers: When did this all start for you as an artist?
A: First of all, performing at the age of 11 was both nerve-racking and incredible. I gave the best performance at that show, and from that moment, I knew I wanted to pursue something musical — whether it was performing, dancing, or eventually Music production. I started writing my own songs at 13, and the first track I ever wrote is called “Incomplete,” which will be on my upcoming debut album, Hazard.
During my early musical journey, I had some professional guidance, but not as much as I needed or hoped for. More than half the time — especially as a Special Needs individual — I was trying to figure out who I am, who I wanted to become, and where I was heading.
Eventually, I decided to embrace who I truly am, surround myself with people who wouldn’t try to steer me away from my identity and brand, and stand out as much as possible. I’ve learned that most people feel pressured to follow others because they’re conditioned to do so. I’ve always been the odd one out — and honestly, I love it. Some people might think I’m weird or different, and that’s fine with me. It means I’m not like them, and I trust my instincts to guide me.
Buzz Slayers: Are you performing live right now? Any touring in support of this release?
A: I’ve done some live performances before, but honestly, these days it’s all about Social media. It’s about building a big enough following and traction online, and then doing exclusive shows where people are paying to see you specifically. Performing random gigs that aren’t connected to your fanbase to me, doesn’t feel like real progress — and a lot of A&Rs share that mindset.
Right now, my focus is on growing my online presence and getting the attention of the right Industry professionals. If you look up Stephan Folkes, I show up — I’ve built a solid SEO presence and have already generated some recognition and Music buzz. Now, it’s about igniting that further and levelling it up.
I’m open to opportunities that make sense for my Brand and journey, whether that’s collaborations, Playlist placements, or even signing a Record deal if the timing and situation is right. But my priority is building a loyal, engaged audience and making moves that actually push my career forward in the long term.
Buzz Slayers: Did you record this in a home studio setup, or did you go to a big studio for this?
A: I actually did both. I’ve got a professional Home studio setup where I do all of my Recording — to save money and time. Then, as I like to say, I head to the “Big boy studio” to work with Nick Michaels from the band Bethnal, who also runs his own Production company, and his friend, Producer Phil Curran. After those sessions, I’ll take my Record Home and add some finishing touches myself. I think it’s important for Artists today to handle as much of the process as they can — not just to save money, but to gain knowledge, wisdom, and be more independent. At the same time, no one can do everything alone. Everyone needs a solid team, and I’m grateful to have people around me who believe in my vision and support my Music I’m creating.
Buzz Slayers: Now that this is out, what's next for you as an artist? Any upcoming releases on the way?
A: I'm promoting quite a few things right now!! Here are some projects I'm promoting: My debut Single: Say it like you mean it. My 2nd Single: It's all within time (travelling through the stars). This Record blends between Dream pop & R&B/Funk Genres. My message behind this Record is that, I invite listeners to reflect on their personal journeys—challenging them to consider times they’ve faced adversity, the lessons learned, and the strength gained from those experiences. The song encourages us all to embrace the passage of time, acknowledging that each trial and tribulation serves as a catalyst for growth.
My upcoming 3rd Single: Somebody out there? Will drop on May 9th 2025 and, it's an Alternative Indie rock, Contemporary R&B/Soul Record. This Record captures the eerie aftermath of a group of British teens who explore an abandoned building with an Ouija board, only to leave with more than they bargained for. Finally, my Album Hazard will drop on June 6th 2025. I'm also working on my 2nd Album. Stay tuned!!
Buzz Slayers: Who's in your headphones right now?
A: Apart from my own Music !! Missy Elliott's Get ur freak on which is such a classic. I remember when this Record came out. I didn't even know Timbaland produced it!! Also Baby Storme (US artist), Ice Spice's former friend. I really dig her style. It's something I can vibe with and Ice Spice is garbage by the way, just like my cousin Deyaz!! The industry hypes a lot of mediocrity these days, and I’m not afraid to say it. Then again, another man's garbage is another man's treasure.
Buzz Slayers: What would you tell people they can expect on this release?
A: Short answer: expect the unexpected—my style breaks convention. Long answer: My Music blends the bold creativity of Prince, the energy of MJ, the soul of George Michael, and the raw emotion of Billie Eilish. If you vibe with any of them, there’s a good chance you’ll connect with my sound!!
Buzz Slayers: Before we go, what would you like to express to fans of the music?
A: To fans of Music—especially those seeking something beyond the ordinary—my sound is for you!! If you’re drawn to Artists like Prince, Michael Jackson, George Michael, or Billie Eilish— who are known for their artistry—you’ll find something familiar yet refreshingly new in my work.
When I make Music like Dream pop it has to have a purpose: immersive, atmospheric Music that doesn’t just entertain—it invites you to think, feel, and explore. The Lyrics may be ambiguous, but that’s the point. My Music is a journey—designed to open your mind, challenge the norm, and break free from trend-chasing conformity. If you’re discovering me now, you’re early—and that’s powerful. Years from now, others may become fans, but they won’t be able to say what you can: I was there from the beginning!!
Thank you Buzz Slayers for this interview!!
