An Interview with Pablo Merino

A new release from Pablo Merino tackles a classic cover and does so with a refreshingly edgy approach, along with keeping true to the original but giving it its own fresh spin, all while making sure the energy is a little wild, which makes perfect sense for the song itself.

The artists cover of "Come Together", a classic originally recorded by The Beatles, takes a bit of its own path and Pablo utilizes a heavier guitar tone and a punch your feel throughout this track to give it an updated portrayal of the song, but it still does have many of the elements the original did from the arrangement, to lyrics, and melodies.

One of the things I loved about this is its energy level, simply because it feels almost like it was recorded live in a sense. You can feel energy fluctuation between the drums, guitars, vocals, and even bass guitar.

This is something I totally loved simply because being able to pull together a track like this is not easy.

Obviously, the artist was fully influenced by bands like the Beatles, which is something you can hear in the track itself, not just because it is a Beatles song, but more because of how he was able to stick to the boundaries of the songwriting but reach outside of those boundaries in terms of tonality.

This was a great version of this track, and to be able to cover a song like this is not an endeavor that's taken lightly.

I adore how he was able to put his own sort of swagger vocally on this track. Everything is a little bit more heavy-handed and has a grittier feel. It has a grungy sort of undertone in the guitars and has a perfect sonic drive that doesn't put them over the top, but right exactly where they need to be to give the song its own breed of heaviness.

Some people will call this more of an alternative rock cover of the track but it blends art rock, classic rock, alternative rock, indie rock, and of course coats everything and pop, so it manages to cover a lot of bases.

What's really so great about it is the simple fact that he was able to deliver a cover of this track that had his own personality attached to it somehow. It pushed the boundaries of what you might expect in terms of a cover of this single.

This is a song that's been covered many times by other famous bands, of course, and over the years, people have come back around to it because it's such a classic track.

I feel like Pablo made this his own. It was the song itself, and because of that, he held on to the core elements that made it special.

While doing all of that, he took that added opportunity to give it extra punch and heavier assets that let the song hit harder, but still have that addictiveness to it.

This was a pretty impressive cover, and I've heard plenty of covers of this track in particular. This is one of the best that I've heard. The reason is that he wasn't afraid to take it to different places. He didn't put walls around it when he was recording it or delivering those vocals, or even pushing the guitar tone to a new place.

I think it takes elements like that to create a cover that feels like it's something new.

There are all kinds of great experimental guitar work on it, there are synth pads that sort of float through the ether of the song, giving it a vaster undertone, and that sort of tripped out, psychedelic underbelly is a key element in being able to have a track feel freeing.

This had a brilliant sonic presence to it from beginning to end, with some surprises around the corners, and a little extra experimental touches, but it all made sense.

With the release of such a well-woven single, we wanted to have a sit-down with the artist to find out where this came from and what might be next for him.

Here's what happened.

Buzz Slayers: Hey and, thanks for taking some time with us! Let's talk a bit about "Come Together"! This was an inventive cover that showcased an edgier feel at times but also plenty of soul! What made you want to cover this classic track?

- For me is an anthem for the unity and like to put all the people together walking forward, I wanted to take that essence and put it in display...Like it doesn't matter who you are, who you love, what you wear, what colour your skin is, which is your sexual identity...No matter how difficult the things are if we keep together we have the strength to face it all.

Buzz Slayers: I am hearing some great styles here! Can you give us some of your biggest musical influences (besides the obvious haha)?

- I am a music lover, I have a diverse tastes. I don't want to leave any important influence out but soul is one of my favourites styles, to express all that emotional stuff inside to connect the very source of spirit, translate it and making it music.

- Rock of course, making the guitar yell and cry!

- Pop , because I grew up with the rising pop culture.

- I think that I can't put only one favourite artist as a reference, I love oldschool music, Queen, Elvis, Chubby Checker, Amy Winehouse, Adele, Bruno Mars, Evanescence, Linking Park, Muse, Twenty one pilots, Sinatra, Tina Turner...and newest groups like 'The lemon twigs', 'The Black keys ', 'Black Pumas ', 'Celeste', 'Raye'... And also Spanish influence because I'm Spanish but with a international soul hehe.

- I think I forgot to put much artists on the list because I love many styles, and songs but sorry, I'm sure you will see all of these influences come out.

Buzz Slayers: How did this all start for you as an artist?

- Well, I believe we all have an artist inside, each with their own abilities and skills in different fields. Sometimes that artist goes out to explore and offer their talent to the world, other times they don't. I think the artist is a child who has survived growing up, hehe. It's very difficult, but there's something I love about this world surrounding music. Connecting with people on stage seems like a healing act to me, first and foremost for myself. I haven't had a very easy life, like many, and music has helped me not to lock myself away and sink. At some point I was a lost child and music helped me find myself, but I'm lying because the first thing that helped me artistically was drawing, it was my way of escaping the pain of reality, then it was dancing, I was a frustrated dancer in a playback group when I was 9 to 11 years old... My father didn't like it and I quit... after a dark period in adolescence and a difficult youth, I started singing, first in secret, then a friend signed me up for a local karaoke contest and I came in third place which encouraged me to continue singing to this day 13 years later.

Buzz Slayers: Do you find it hard to re-imagine this song?

The difficulty lies in the song's popularity. A song that's so successful and so well-known is very difficult to cover; there's a huge critical eye on you. I wanted to give it a retro feel with nuances of the sounds of Michael Jackson, Prince, Stevie Wonder, or Toto. It's like genetic engineering, hehe, adding super-characteristics of several of the artists who influence me the most. The result was a Frankenstein, but fresh and different, with an accelerated rhythm, a dark groove, and the genes of my favorite artists, with all those musical nuances coming from an ethereal place.

I have to say that, the producer, Arturo Miceli was open to listen to me and take the idea to create this version like this together.

Buzz Slayers: What instruments are you performing on this?

No, I'm not playing any instrument here, just singing.

Buzz Slayers: Do you play live shows at all?

Yes , for sure. I'm working on stages since thirteen years ago, at first solo then as a duo with a guitar player and finally I'm playing with local bands here.

But I have to say that I have a normal job too.

Not everyone can dedicate themselves to music full-time but is the real goal.

Buzz Slayers: Who is in your headphones right now?

Colors of Black Pumas

Buzz Slayers: Now that this single is released, what is next for you?

The next is to keep working, doing music, growing and be humble and true.

Buzz Slayers: What kind of advice would you have for other bands and artists getting their music out there?

- If they love what they do, don't give up, keep working, the success is not only fame or money, the success is to do what you love to do and what makes your spirit vibrate.

Buzz Slayers: What can you say people might expect from this track?

- It is not a very commercial song, it is made with a lot of love, thought to be enjoyed quietly since it has many instrumental nuances, it is a new meaning of the song, a new message from the same source, soon we will accompany it with a video clip since I wanted it to have audiovisual content as well.

Buzz Slayers: Before we go, what would you like to express to fans of the music?

- The music industry is changing everything. It's hard to hear good music. It's a fast-paced musical era. We can find inspiration by looking beyond the official music charts, exploring classic and alternative sounds, and creating a space for different music and new artists.
