A new single release from Jessica Sevier gives a very honest approach and with that, a sentiment that I think most of us can actually relate to pretty well. The track delivers a wonderfully colorful and almost cinematic Americana tonality that's coated in pop and feels great to listen to.
"Good To Drive" is a track that feels like it's about that one person who sends you a text or gives you a call, and you're just sort of weak to them. You know it's not the best idea, but you're going to go anyway.
It's got a certain kind of spirit to it and an element of living in the moment, to an extent, which is something I enjoyed because the song has this vivacious musical approach anyway.
This was a lush track. It's got a lot of great production to it with layers of instrumentation, both electric and acoustic, that come together and create this sort of atmosphere that feeds into the song's sentiment very well.
What reaches out and grabs you are those vocals. They have a certain swagger or sort of soul to them. They are a bit attitude-riddled but packed with character and personality, which is something you want from a song like this.
That personality comes from honesty, along with the performance.
You can tell this came from someplace real. That is a person for Jessica, and she's letting them know to listen, if you give me a call, I'll be good to drive.
This is just how I'm taking it. Others may just take it in the sense that this is a person who is there for their friends. If that friend gives them a call, she'll be right over there no matter what to support them.
But if you really listen to those lyrics, I feel like it has a little bit more of a personal approach and breaks through certain boundaries in terms of making that decision to hop in the car and go to that person.
Either way, you're in for a great track that doesn't outstanding job of letting Jessica's presence as an artist shine.
You can hear a slew of country and Americana influences, but you can also hear the pop flowing through the veins of this track, which adds a lot of color and brightness to everything.
It's a song that's absolutely danceable, and by the second or third time around, you'll be singing that chorus at the top of your lungs simply because it's memorable.
This is almost like an anthem. It's got that sense to it where you can relate to it, but have never spoken out about it. You know that it's a sentiment that you completely understand and have likely been in that situation before, but this is the first time you're actually hearing a song about it.
I love that vibe. I love that Jessica wrote a song about that kind of situation and made it lovable, vibrant, and packed with this almost bubbly energy that works amazingly to create the aesthetic that she needed.
It's not supposed to be such a serious track. It's supposed to be a bit light-hearted, and that comes through at times, lyrically, but a lot of the time, musically.
It feels good to listen to this track, and it's definitely the kind of song where you can hear that country undertone coming through.
To me, it's actually a perfect blend of those genres. The Americana, the country, the pop, and some soul. It's got a great combination of approaches that make it a bit unique.
It's not reinventing the wheel, but it's beautifully done, and it really gives Jessica a persona. When you hear songs like this, you listen to those lyrics and you hold on to that kind of persona.
She made it work perfectly here and with charm to boot.
I definitely loved her vocal layers and harmonies throughout the track, how the instrumentation set a certain mood and tone for the song, and how she was able to stay true to her country roots while giving this a big backbone.
It's got a big sound, especially at those choruses.
She certainly knows how to let loose on a track, and this shows how fun and light-hearted she can be when delivering a track with some honesty and some heart.
I would definitely check this out as soon as you can, and while you're at it, check out the interview we had with the artist below.
After listening to the track, we wanted to speak with Jessica to find out what this was actually about and what may be coming up next for the artist.
Here's what happened.
Buzz Slayers: Let's talk about "Good To Drive". This certainly showcased some Americana backbone! Where did this track come from?
This track came from a moment where I found myself in the car pretty much
embodying the sentiment of “Good to Drive”. I was driving to see someone I knew I shouldn’t be seeing but couldn’t help myself and I thought “wow, I always make
myself available to this person. This could make for a great song”. I wrote the title
down in my notes app and the rest is history!
Buzz Slayers: I'm hearing a few different approaches to this one! Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
My biggest musical influence definitely starts with Bruce Springsteen, I called “Good to Drive” my version of “Born to Run” wanting it to embody that feeling of freeness and taking on the world in any way you chose. However, I am also inspired by some more modern artists like Lainey Wilson and Ella Langley - two badass chicks who aren’t afraid to say what they wanna say.
Buzz Slayers: You had some heavy hitters lend a hand with this song! How did you land that?
I was so excited and grateful to be put in a room with Robyn Ottolini and Derek
Hoffman, two individuals who I admire very much. They are both such incredible
writers and musicians and they really helped bring my vision for this song to life. Fraser Hill, who oversees my A&R had the idea to put the three of us in a room to see what happened and in our first session we came out with “Good To Drive”.
Buzz Slayers: Did you record this at a home setup, or at a big studio?
I recorded this at Derek Hoffman’s studio in downtown Toronto. Derek who
produced and mixed this record played all the instrumentation and then I came in and did the lead vocal! Then had Katie Munshaw sing the background vocals remotely. It was an awesome and smooth experience to work with Derek in his studio.
Buzz Slayers: How did this all start for you as an artist?
Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started taking it seriously as a career when I was 14 and wrote my first song. After that I started
performing anywhere and everywhere I could and just kept trying my hand at writing and entertaining. I never really stopped and I’ve grown so much and I’m super grateful to the people who have believed in me and helped me get to where I am now.
Buzz Slayers: Are you performing live right now?
YES!! I have many performances I am super excited about this summer. I also just announced a fall residency at The Cameron House every Tuesday in November!

Buzz Slayers: Now that this is out, what's next for you?
I have so much coming up next that I am very excited about. I don’t want to spoil too much yet, but there will be lots of new music coming out over the next couple of months and a full EP coming in the new year!
Buzz Slayers: Who's in your headphones right now?
A) So many amazing artists! I’ve been listening to a lot of The Beaches - I can’t wait for their new album to come out, I love to see some fellow Toronto musicians get the recognition they deserve. I am also listening to a lot of Tucker Wetmore, I think his new album is really great, the songwriting is very clever!
Buzz Slayers: What would you tell people they can expect on this release?
I think people can expect to hear really honest and vulnerable songwriting. I typically like to present myself as a strong individual but this song shows a different side of me - someone who is hopelessly in love they lose their sense of self a little bit. I hope people can relate to this one!
Buzz Slayers: Before we go, what would you like to express to fans of the music?
I would just like to say a big thank you to anyone who has listened to my music or supported my career in any way! I see all of the comments and the love and it is deeply appreciated! I cannot wait to continue on this journey and see where it takes me!
