An Interview with Elyse Aeryn

An absolutely delightful new single from Elyse Aeryn brings out a lush and colorful pop approach that blends classic and commercial pop with elements of old school approaches, utilizing certain kinds of synthesizers and ketones, but also brings in a great rock backbone as well.

This combination of soundscapes works wonders for the track because her vocals are so robust and can be very soulful, especially during those choruses, so it all helps the energy and drive of the track.

"Unstoppable" has a great sentiment to it and feels good to listen to because it's so spirited in its songwriting and performance.

Again, Elyse has this gorgeous vocal approach, and throughout the track, you hear lush harmonies and impactful choruses, which is amazing because the music behind it all matches that energy nearly perfectly.

I do indeed love that crossover of old and new school approaches, bringing some of that vintage or almost 80s pop aesthetics into such a new approach that is, of course, much more current.

I love those little hints because they give you the idea that she was possibly influenced by some artists she actually grew up with.

This is a robust track that comes through with a vivacious approach and attitude, so her energy is incredibly infectious throughout this entire thing, and on top of that, it delivers a load of personality and character, which is maybe the most impactful aspect of the track itself.

Being able to bring in the rock aspect on top of all of this was brilliant. The song was produced incredibly well and showcases the same level of color as it does edginess, which comes through, still with a particular warmth that feels inviting.

It also has a great honesty to it. Listening to the song lets you know that it came from some authentic place, and it speaks volumes for Elyse as an artist simply because she is drawing from what would probably be considered a chapter in her own life.

There's something so alluring and addictive about this track, and it's not just about the sentiment. It's about how she performs it all.

She's got a vibrancy in her vocals, and she puts a lot of herself into the song so aside from it being so honest, you also know that she's enjoying that performance.

This, in turn, makes you enjoy the performance as well. Again, the spirited approaches are incredibly infectious.

I definitely feel like this is a track that speaks volumes for the artist, and it has incredible hooks that stick with you for hours after the song has ended.

Being able to blend the commercial pop approach with bits of rock and even a soul, along with tiny hints of Southern undertone, all create a unique atmosphere that you don't want to step out of. You just want to stay there with her and enjoy it.

Now, as far as we can tell, this is an album release which is set to drop later this year, and if it has more songs like this on it, I can't wait.

Just from hearing this one song, I already know this album is going to pack plenty of character and personality.

Elyse has recently embarked on a tour that is going through the summer, and this single was the kickoff.

With the release of such an engaging and bright release, we wanted to speak with her about the song, tour, and what's coming next.

Here's what happened.

Buzz Slayers: Hey Elyse, thank you for taking some time! Let's talk about Unstoppable!

This track had a heavy handed pop overtone but was honest and soulful vocally! Where did this song come from?

I love that you hear that! I am undeniably influenced by roots and soul music, but I’m also a fan of big production with a pop-sensibility. I wrote “Unstoppable” on an acoustic guitar but was envisioning performing it live in a stadium. I could hear that groovy, danceable bass line in my head but it took a few iterations before we got it feeling right. When we did, I knew it was the first single.

Buzz Slayers: I'm hearing a few different approaches to this release! Who are some of your biggest musical influences?

I am a huge fan of Stevie Nicks, The Rolling Stones, and rock and roll in general, but some of my more recent influences are Maggie Rogers, RAYE, and Remi Wolf for pop and Grace Potter, Marcus King, and Chris Stapleton for southern/roots rock.

Buzz Slayers: Are you performing any instruments on this song?

I typically play acoustic guitar when performing live but there is no acoustic on this recording! I wanted to leave lots of space for the groove.

Buzz Slayers: How did this all start for you as an artist?

I had a bit of a late start in music. I went to university, started a career and followed a path that didn’t light me up for almost 10 years. I got to a point when I couldn’t just go through the motions any longer. My partner at the time asked if I could do anything with my life regardless of age, time or money, what would I do. I said music. One year later I quit my job and moved home to take a chance on it. I had to do a lot of inner work to get to where I am today and it certainly wasn’t easy, but I hope that by sharing my story I can show someone else what's possible.

Buzz Slayers: Are you performing live right now?

I am currently touring across Canada promoting “Unstoppable”. We started in

Newfoundland and will go as far as Stratford, Ontario. It’s my first time touring beyond the east coast of Canada and I’m so ready for it!

Buzz Slayers: This single is a glimpse into the upcoming album correct? Can you tell us a little about that?

That’s right, my sophomore album “Everybody Loves You…” will be released in October with two more singles throughout the summer. I leaned into everything that is unique about me – the soulful voice, the rock and roll spirit, the pop-sensibility. I gave this record all I had. I think it shows in the songwriting, the vocal performances, and the production.

Buzz Slayers: Who's in your headphones right now?

The new HAIM tracks. “Relationships” absolutely slaps.

Buzz Slayers: What would you tell people they can expect on this release?

I believe this record is something people have been waiting for. A revival of the spirit of the female rock/pop archetype – Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett, Alanis. It’s soulful roots-rock but it’s got energy. You can dance, you can scream, and you can cry. And I’ll be right there with you.

Buzz Slayers: Before we go, what would you like to express to fans of the music?

Thank you for letting me do the thing I love to do. Whether you are streaming my songs, telling your friends, buying an album, or coming to my shows – you are the reason I get to do this!
