An empowering and edgy new single just dropped from Athxna, and this track manages to showcase such a unique breed of honesty in the form of a soundscape that has a unique way of bending genres and incorporating elements of cinematic pop with R&B aesthetics, fast undertones, and this addictive sort of personality that comes through.
"Villain" is the artist's way of speaking her mind without boundaries. She's letting a lot out, but as edgy and almost dark as it feels, she knows who she is, and she's letting all of those inner thoughts sort of spill out for all the soak in.
This is one of the attributes that I found most impactful about this song.
Athxna is Relentless but in a beautiful and again, empowering way.
This song is completely unafraid, still a little bit vulnerable, maybe cathartic for her to write and release, and has this tonality that wraps itself around you and keeps you right where it wants to.
The production of this track breeds a semi-theatrical approach because of the spacious ambience that lurks just beneath the surface of the track, which in a way, represents the dark side of her honesty.
I definitely loved how the song came across.
The way it builds to become more intense as it unfolds is brilliant, and the second half of the song gives you additional and edgier synthesizers and textures that help the climactic element come through stronger.
Among all of this, you have vocals that are intense, passionate, packed with soul and just authenticity, which rolls back into how the song came from someplace very real.
She's truly opening up on this song, but she's doing it in a way that tells you to take it or leave it. It doesn't matter. She's doing this for her.
This is what I consider to be true art. Creating with fewer boundaries than the norm and with fewer walls built around what you're trying to express.
The song was freeing to even listen to.
The whole thing comes across with a graceful sort of darkness. And when I say darkness, I just mean the way she sheds light on certain aspects of her character and does that with an unapologetic aesthetic.
It's quite beautiful, really.
You get engulfed by this song and sort of just swallowed up by the soundscape of everything, but he pays so much attention to those lyrics because they're right in your face, and they can be intense.
It's the kind of singing that calls your attention, and that is part of why you're paying so much attention to what she's singing about.
Once you get a grasp of what she is thinking about, you're stuck.
For some people, this is super relatable. There is a connective element to her lyrical approach that beckons our own inner thoughts to an extent.
There are string and synth pads that float through the ether of the song, giving it that distance and again, cinematic backbone, while she boasts a gorgeous range of vocal intensities that can hit pretty hard.
By the end, you get washed away with everything.
This is a song you listen to with headphones on. This way, you can pick up on all the layers that are happening.
Upon listening to this track, I took a deep dive into Athxna's back catalog on Spotify, and there are more than a handful of amazing releases that you should check out as well.
She definitely shows different sides of her personality and songwriting throughout these songs, but if you like this track, you're bound to like a lot of the others.
Again, it's about that personality shining through and how she's able to present herself with such a presence that you can't look away.
Take a listen to this track when you can and remember where you heard it first.
