A massive new single from Greyfade delivers some classic metal riffs and a crunchy but thick guitar tone, along with thriving energy to create a closed-fisted atmosphere, still with vastness in its undertone, but also with a heavy punch.
"Go Viral" starts bringing some of that vastness in at the intro of the song with a spacious beginning, giving you an almost cinematic backbone right from the get-go.
This soon opens up right into the track's main guitar riff, and if you're a fan of classic metal like Iron Maiden, for example, then you'll definitely hear that influence in this riff.
It's a big, slower-paced but very deepening style riff.
This is a blistering sound and works amazingly to pull you right into the song.
From there, the vocals come in and are melodic but still have a little bit of edginess. The vocals grow in intensity as the song goes.
Everything about this track is very well balanced in terms of its energy levels.
The drumming is outstanding here. It doesn't just give you something that sits in the pocket. Instead, it adds a lot of drive to the song and brings with it a liveliness that the rest of the instruments seem to push off of.
Soon enough, they move into double kicks, and things start picking up a lot as it rolls into its massive chorus.
The chorus of the song is definitely the most sonically invasive and almost anthemic part of the track.
Part of the spacious underbelly is due to the keys, which are part organ and part synth pad, or so it sounds.
Not only does this build on the depth of the track, but it also adds a little bit of darkness to it.
Once the chorus kicks in, the vocals thicken up and are layered, which adds loads of texture to the song. The guitars, keys, and vocals are all really big during those sections, making the chorus super memorable.
You can tell there was a lot of thought that went into the arrangement of the track, but also into the mix.
I don't always talk about the mix of a song, but here I think it's important because the way it was mixed doesn't just let things balance, but it also lets things build to those climactic moments perfectly with all of those layers and textures coming in at once.
The chorus is like a fist in the air, a chanting style sing-along section, and when you hear it, you can almost picture a crowd chanting right along with it.
Not only does this riff have that huge sonic presence and gigantic chorus, but it also features some amazing guitar work in the form of a solo.
This is something I've missed in a lot of metal and heavier music for quite some time now.
For some reason, guitar solos faded out. I never understood why, as they have always been a pinnacle of metal music.
Just before that final chorus, we get a technically amazing but still melodic and soulful guitar solo that sits perfectly in with the aesthetic of the rest of the song.
This was a love letter to metal in general. Again, you can hear the slew of influences the artist holds close to his heart coming through as the song unfolds.
The thing that really blew me away was finding out that this whole thing was apparently all done by one man.
Greyfade is the brainchild of songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Fadi Helou.
As I listened to the song more and more, I began to try to imagine how someone can have an idea or vision for a song like this and then bring it all to fruition.
This was a track that hit all the metal bells and whistles, but also had depth to it that worked amazingly.
Most of all, it had character and heart. Yes, metal can have plenty of heart.
Now, this isn't thrashing, speed, or any sort of brutal metal; it's melodic metal at its best.
Absolutely, check this out and listen to it nice and loud.
Upon hearing this track, I took a bit of a deep dive into the artist's back catalog on Spotify. I found some other killer singles released recently, including "The Failing", which also has just as much drive but showcases a different side of songwriting and some other influences.
If you dig this track, you're going to love a lot of others.
Check it all out now and remember where you hear it first.
