A single release from Sannie Fox comes through with a fresh breed of honesty in the form of a genre-bender that delivers this edgy and swagger-riddled alternative pop soundscape, and along with it, you get a robust sense of personality and plenty of soul.
"Bamboo" is full of surprises around every corner and the textural and layered sonic approach to this track is vivacious and lush as it brings together electronic and natural instrumentation like guitars, synths, vocals, and a '90s style beat that brings to mind underground mid-90s pop artists.
One of my favorite aspects about this track is its production because it combines not only genres but also synths and keys that are inventive, semi-experimental, and along with all that edginess, you get some color.
The song has a heavy-handed groove so it comes through danceable with plenty of pop underbelly to it that shows face throughout the track. It's focused on being alternative and I love that factor because that gives it most of its character.
The combination of the sort of hard-hitting but deep grooving alt-pop and rock influences of the song blends amazingly with her incredibly Soulful vocals because she's got that sort of again, swagger to how she delivers them.
There's just no better way to put it. There is plenty of attitude pumping through the veins of this track and I enjoyed how it showed a little bit of a personality and sense that it came from someplace for you lyrically.
A heavy aspect of this single is how she lays in these unbelievable melodies throughout the song. All the verses, choruses, and pre-choruses all have these addictive melodies.
I found myself loving this one descending melody line that she does vocally and just waiting for that part to come back around.
I love a song that gives me that little sense of addiction.
You can certainly tell that Sannie has a love for her craft and I don't just mean singing. I mean putting songs together and being able to put something into the world that has a message behind it, has some layers to it, and can really wrap itself around you and keep you right where it wants to.
Along with this track comes a music video which also shows even more for character and personality, some of her allure and a little bit of mystery.
I dig how that all comes together and watching this music video is one of the best ways to listen to the song for the first time.
I would also suggest listening to this track with headphones on simply because again, there are a lot of layers to this and different synth and ketones and sounds that come in and out throughout the track that let it come through experimental, slightly trippy, but always with that great edge and punch.
Listening to the track with headphones is the best way to soak all of those layers in.
Sannie actually produced, wrote, arranged and recorded this release on her own and released it on the Just Music record label.
Upon listening to this track I took a bit of a deep dive into her back catalog on Spotify. She dropped a full-length album in 2015 followed by another in 2018 and has since been pumping out handfuls of singles.
They are all a bit different, and each of these releases shows different sides to her songwriting, artistry, and personality.
I suggest jumping into those especially if you like "Bamboo" because there's a lot to dig through and it's easy to get engulfed by her records.
This massive track gave me hints of nostalgia here and there, along with a sense of experimental freedom as the song was created and built with fewer boundaries than you may be used to while still being super catchy and enticing.
Take a listen to this track as soon as you can and remember where you heard it first.
