A Southern Toned New Single from The Mukherjee Development

A fresh single from The Mukherjee Development delivers a wonderfully rich, semi-southern-toned pop single that gives hints of Americana, especially with some of that guitar work, but sticks to more of that indie feel vocally.
Still, there's something definitely classic about this track. It is a song that is rooted in guitar work and this trotting rhythm that gets you really into the song, and all throughout it you've got a chorus that is smooth, a little colorful, and really catchy.
This is a track that feels like it's about how different things happen in life and no matter who we are, we all want to be loved.
We may lose people in different ways, we may make mistakes, we may like or dislike the kind of person that we become at a certain point, there's always time to change, and there's always the want to be loved once more.
The title of the track, "Tatters", feels like it signifies a tattered white flag being waved. In other words, you've had enough; you're not necessarily giving up, but you're done with the fight.
You want to be a better person, and no matter who you are, you do deserve to be loved.
This is a great sentiment, and the way I interpreted it felt good. Although others may interpret it in different ways, I loved what it did for me.
The reason is that I connected with that message pretty heavily, and I feel like others will too.
The vocals are sort of relaxed. The whole song has an almost soothing element to it, even though it does have a bit of that foxtrot I mentioned earlier. The rhythm is great because it keeps that pop intact, but the guitar work, once again, leans into a southern-toned approach at times.
There are a few layers of guitars, and the bass guitar tone is really amazing here. I feel like the bass guitar is almost acoustic, but I'm probably wrong about that. It just has that rounded tone that really fills the song extremely well.
The band goes through that chorus enough times to have it really stick with you. You find yourself humming it later on throughout the day, and this just signifies a band that knows how to write a good pop hook.
This was radio friendly, in my opinion.
The song really hooked me with, not just the warmth of its tone, but the flavorful hooks and choruses, along with some of those layers of instrumentation. The guitars really lend a great hand to country music, even a little hint of honky-tonk, if you ask me. Between the rhythm and the guitar work, I can certainly hear some honky-tonk influence in there.
It's really cool how they're able to sort of bend genres to create their own thing. As I mentioned earlier, it's very pop-coated.
Now, if this is your first go with the band, I suggest this as a great introduction; however, their 2025 release, Square Up On A Curve, is a full album that showcases a lot of other sides to the band's songwriting and approaches.
They definitely have an influence from classic rock, they hit some indie folk, singer-songwriter, and a whole bunch more all rolled into one record, and if you dig "Tattered", then I'm positive you're going to really be into that album as well.
This is a band that branches out into different directions when they feel like it. They are able to write in different ways because I'm sure they're influenced by loads of different bands and songwriting that they put into play with their own music in different forms.
I would definitely give this single a go so you can get a feel for some of that Americana-tinged pop-riddled style, but then delve into that other album as well because you get a fuller picture of what the band is about and the different approaches that they take on when they feel like it.
So, check this track out, dig into that record from last year, and see what it all does for you.
