A Sonically Driving Release from Ego Death Machine

ree

One of my absolute favorite aspects about the new single from Ego Death Machine has to be the series of riffs the song introduces itself with because you get this sort of indie and garage rock feel from those riffs, and they're super melodic, super hooky, and still have a little bit of drive but do an amazing job of building into the massive sonic wave of thrash that comes right afterwards.

The tone of those guitars is everything. These guys definitely took a lot of time and paid attention to the tones of their instruments because that's really what helps drive it all through the roof. That sonic presence is gigantic, and when they burst into chords, it's explosive, to say the very least.

Now, "The Temple" is still kind of a garage-punk and rock approach because the tone is very fuzzy, but it also has this other layer of texture to it that really lets it stand out.

The tone of that bass is gritty, rumbling, and fat. It's sort of distorted with the same distortion of the guitars, or maybe a little bit different, but I think the combination of the distortions between the guitars and the bass guitar is really what helps this thing feel so impactful.

You can hear the bass guitar tone a little clearer when the guitars are performing those lead-style hooks and the bass guitar is just rocking out beneath them. It gives you a real sense of depth, and these guys really are amazing at layering those textures so that you have this sort of rambunctious atmosphere to fall into.

Then, everything settles down a little bit, and you get an open chord that holds out before the vocals start coming in, and those vocals have a bit of a stoner rock kind of vibe, but the whole thing does at the same time.

In my opinion, this song falls into stoner, psychedelic, garage, punk, alternative, and plenty more. Part of why the song rocks so well.

Before I go on, I have to give props to the drummer. The drumming on this track is really what gives it its immense drive, and it's not just in the pocket. It's alive. It gives liveliness to the song itself, and when the vocals come in and they're sort of performing those riffs again, the drumming changes up and has a really cool rhythm to it.

One of the things that hits hardest about this track is the energy. The energy is completely through the roof and 100% electric. It feels like they recorded this track live on the floor so that everyone could just feed off each other's energies the entire time.

This, in part, is what gives you this live performance feel and pushes the wild energy of this track to its maximum.

Yes, there are some really cool lead guitar sections going on where the guitar has a different tone, sort of dripping with reverb effect, and at times the vocals have that same effect going on as well. This adds a sort of wetness to the track and again gives it more depth as well.

The sonic presence of the song as a whole is so massive that it feels almost like it's peaking at times. As if it were so loud that the recording itself was fuzzing out. I love this because it just gives you the feel of something that has a huge punch to it. It's part of the wildness of it all.

Everyone was on the same page here. They understood the mission, and they delivered something that blended some of the best elements of psych-rock, heavy rock, grunge, garage, and punk; performed with incredible gusto.

This was a trip of a song, but it hit super hard at the same time. It's amazing how they were able to create this vast undertone while having so much overdrive at the same time.

But don't just take my word for it, I have a listen for yourself so you can see exactly what I mean.

Bear in mind that this is a track you listen to loudly. If you're going to put it on at a super low volume or something, don't even bother.

There's an aesthetic that's meant to be delivered, and it's meant to be delivered at high volume.

Listening to this track made me want to go see them live in person. If they can capture this kind of energy and aesthetic, character, and grit on record so well, then seeing them live must be a face-melter.

This is what I would expect.

Anyway, take a deep dive into this one and do not forget where you heard it first.
