Matt DeAngelis returns with a gorgeous new single that comes in the form of a classic-rock-influenced power ballad of sorts, but is built on amazing piano work, incredible lead guitar work, and a certain kind of warmth and messaging that leaves an impact.
This new single marks a part of Matt's new era of songwriting. He's always put pieces of himself in his music and has always been able to put personality and certain kinds of messaging behind the songs, but this song in particular is heavy-handed in that messaging, and it's incredibly connective and relatable to just about any of us.
Writing a song about how the people in this world are one and how we should all relate, connect, respect, communicate, and be with one another is really a brave and important sentiment, simply because it's the truth.
The song is based on how people treat each other and how we can be greatly improved if we just use our hearts instead of our heads.
I found this to be a little bit profound simply because it's something that makes so much sense, and for all of us who think of concepts like this, it's very hard to put into words.
This is why, when an artist like Matt is able to articulate that in both words and music, it's really impressive. You have the lyrics that deliver that message right in your face and are cut and dry. We should be getting along better than we are now. People on the planet are one and will always be.
Stop looking at the person next to you as one thing or another and look at them like you're looking into a mirror.
This isn't practical stuff, and the reason is that it's absolutely 100% true. Once you think about it and realize that this is spot on, it may change your perspective to an extent.
Again, this is an artist who always puts pieces of himself in the music, but is also able to write lyrics in a way that tells a story and sends that message with crystal clarity.
The music is absolutely outstanding. The piano work on this one is above and beyond. Having written and listened to several of his previous singles, I feel like he's evolving as a performer and instrumentalist.
When you listen to a song like this, you can't help but wonder how someone has an idea for it and then brings it all to fruition by themselves.
That, to me, is one of the more impressive aspects of the entire thing.
I think a lot of us have ideas for songs, but to be able to take the idea and make it a reality is something completely different.
The piano performances on this track are pretty much everything. They're played with passion, heart, great dynamic sort of balance, and it still leans towards that kind of classic rock influence, a lot of emotionally backed mood that is pushed forward.
Sounds like this does indeed set a particular mood. You have to listen, but when you do, it really can sort of wrap itself around you.
Between the pianos, organs, guitars, live percussion, and layers of vocal tracks, this becomes such a full-bodied song. There are loads of textures coming together, and you can tell there was plenty of attention paid to the tones of the instruments, as usual.
At the last three singles Matt has released, they really have taken a bit of a different turn from his older stuff.
Now again, he writes in all different kinds of approaches, with some of that rock underbelly almost always there.
The newer songs have more of that piano-driven rock vibe, and it leans into contemporary zones, always touching on the pop element and sensibility that he has just naturally, as a songwriter.
So, songs like this come through catchy and memorable. Of course, this track is very sticky. It doesn't go away. You kind of carry it with you for the rest of the day after you listen to the song.
This doesn't only have to do with the lyrics and the importance of the messaging behind it, but also the way it is performed and written.
The song has intensity that comes in and out. It has brilliant elements of sonic drive that are placed perfectly and strewn throughout the song so that it sort of breathes.
All of this is done in 3 minutes. So that also tells you Matt pays attention to the length of time for certain kinds of tracks, so that it has that radio-friendly kind of length come along with keeping the pop attributes laced into everything.
This is one of my new favorites from the artist.
Now, if you haven't heard anything before this song, then I would definitely check out those other releases I was mentioning before.
"Livin' It" and "I'm Just The Keyboard Player" are both really amazing, and those are some of the key turning points in his songwriting approach, and you can also hear a great evolution in the production style.
So, definitely check this song out because again, it has an amazing message behind it that is very connective, makes amazing sense, and you just wish everyone in the world could hear it at once.
It's tasteful and just tells you a lot about Matt's personality.
Dive in and remember where you heard it first.
