A brand new release from Hilary Cousins delivers quite an interesting sentiment, and for us, it feels like a quest for love and how important that is in life, no matter what your journey may be.
"Road To Corinth " is very ear-grabbing lyrically because it takes you on a bit of a journey that takes you into such a strong sentiment, and it's something that connects with you as a human.
Underneath It All, we're all looking for the same thing. A certain kind of connection. We're looking for that love so that we can have our hearts filled and have this almost existential purpose for life itself.
This is an attribute that hit me pretty hard about the song, and it's done in such a brilliant way that the lyrics are articulated perfectly so that whoever's listening can really pick up that message; however, I do think the message will be relayed slightly differently depending on who is actually listening.
For some, it will feel more personal, for others it will feel more universal, but either way, the message is still there.
It's quite a beautiful song and blends an Americana, almost folk rock approach with something that has a southern tone, but classic as well. I feel like there's a lot of classic rock influence here, and you still do pick up on the country or Americana hints that you get in the guitar tones, the vocal approach, and more.
This comes through brightly. It's not dulled down by anything. It's got great effects on the guitars that give it a robust feel, the vocals are sort of mellow but portray a lot of character, and that's something that lets the song thrive in a sense.
One of the things I love most about this is the combination of acoustic and electric guitars. When the song begins, you hear plenty of that acoustic guitar before it unfolds fully, and you hear more of the full band feel.
The start of the song lets you pay more attention to the lyrics and gets you attached to the sentiment or story of it.
You also get little bits of a sort of 90s rock feel here and there, and it all comes together like pieces of a puzzle.
The track also features some organs that really thicken things up and also, for me, add to that classic rock back, but I mentioned earlier.
You always hear great organs in classic rock music. And this song brings together different elements of how Americana, country, folk, and rock all contribute to being heavily influential to all different kinds of songwriters out there.
Hilary is certainly someone who has a slew of influences under his belt and utilizes those to create music that has atmosphere.
This is a song you get pulled into and end up floating around in the atmosphere for the entire time.
There is a great sense of emotion vocally, and that also pushes the character behind the song along with the sentiment, because you know it came from an authentic space within the artist's mind.
It's a song that beckons and calls out for the need to have a certain kind of love in your life.
The way the lyrics are laid out is both straightforward and metaphoric simultaneously, which I found quite ingenious and something that helped me paint pictures as I listened to it.
It also adds to this sense of cinematic aesthetic that the song also brings forth.
The overlapping guitars bounce off of each other a lot of the time and give the song an added life, along with this particular energy that isn't overexcitable, isn't fully calm, but balanced in the middle.
There's something very nostalgic about this song. It feels like a song that I've been listening to for years on the radio, and I definitely fell right into it.
By the time you get to that final set of choruses, it's full-bodied, full-fledged, and Lush with amazing instrumentation and robust energy that comes through with even more motion than it did earlier.
This was an excellent track and something that definitely stands tall amongst Americana and folk rock out there everywhere.
Take a good listen to this one and remember where you heard it first.
