The latest single release from Audrey Riggs comes through with a nearly perfect rock edge and takes an approach that blends a classic hard rock style, with a current pop-rock approach all with attitude-riddled vocals that come through with a little bit of swagger.
"Girl" is definitely a pop-rock banger, and it comes in swinging so that you get the vibe of the track right from the get-go. This is something that Audrey does with her music, but she has her own style of doing it.
Catchy that way. Everything changes during that chorus. The guitar parts leave empty spaces for her to emphasize the lyrics, she has a little bit more swagger and vibrato and her vocal, all of it feels like it hits harder during those parts, so it works perfectly in terms of the arrangement of the song.
There's also an outstanding bridge section towards the end of the song right before that last chorus and it's a little bit experimental but shows the extra edginess in the production of the track itself.
There's definitely something very alluring about Audrey's voice on this one and that personality and vocal approach has a way of reeling you in.
I like this a lot because it's got a boldness to it and the song comes through robustly, sort of heavy and hard-hitting but not really over the top. It's just balanced perfectly enough to pack the punch that you wanted and when the song is over you feel super satiated.
The guitar tone is spot on, and you can hear the influence of classic rock, alternative rock, pop rock, indie rock, and even alternative pop in this track all rolled into one single that has this amazing balance of energies.
You have this hard rock song that again, packs the edginess, packs the punch, and is hard-hitting and then the vocals come in and they're sultry in a way and again, they have that attitude, but the aggressiveness is all in the underbelly of how she performs them.
So, in other words, she's not belting or screaming, she's singing and doing it in a way that is kind of sexy and that is the edginess that balances out with the harder music of the track.
This worked perfectly and came through as a memorable powerhouse of a track that speaks volumes for Audrey as a songwriter and as a performer for sure.
Her presence says an artist is loud and clear on this track and not only that but, we're pretty familiar with Audrey's music and have had the pleasure of reviewing and listening to her previous releases.
This track showcases how she has evolved as an artist and as a person as well from when she first started releasing music on Spotify in 2019.
If you listen to the songs released from then up until now, you can hear that evolution for yourself and it's a really fun thing to do.
I love this direction, and I think that she has found yet another amazing footing for what she does, and I think it's brave that she puts out music with, so few walls built around it and with a bit of freedom.
Having said all that, if you like this song then you're going to like a lot of her other releases so I would definitely suggest going through some of her back catalog on Spotify after listening to this track.
A lot of her stuff comes from someplace real, whether it's in a thought or emotionally driven.
Take a listen to "Girl" and don't be afraid to turn it up because it sounds really good that way.
Remember where you heard it first.
