If you are somewhat unfamiliar with the works of Mike Andersen, then it's about time you got to know the artist. The timing is perfect because he just released his 10th LP, and this record speaks volumes for the songwriter as an artist, lyricist, and Storyteller.
His latest album is called "All Out Of Love".
This is a release that you get pulled into very quickly and very easily, simply because he does have a natural knack for telling stories in a way that grabs your attention. The approach to the lyrics of this record feels personal, of course, but also paints beautiful pictures as songs unfold, which is a unique attribute that you don't always get, so when you come across it, it's a bit refreshing.
The LP delves into a rustic folk, songwriter, Americana, and classic blues set of styles and you get this blend with most songs on the record, although each one has something a little bit different to bring to the table.
One of the things that really makes this work so well is that it almost feels like a concept record of sorts. It's like the songs serve more like chapters in the artists alive and you're invited into hear them so Mike himself is inviting you into his life.
He's got a great, robust sort of vocal approach a lot of the time that feels theatrical and gives a lot of the songs layers so that you can sort of step into those stories well.
It's not just about the lyrics. The lyrics do get you into the stories and the songs, they feel real and honest, but the performance is really what sets the tone for everything.
The way he performs creates these thick soundscapes, which can be more bare bones at times with guitar and vocals as the main focal points. You have electric guitars and acoustic guitars throughout this album, but you do have that again, rustic blues and folk sort of feel throughout this release.
I was a bit taken aback by how one-on-one and genuine the songs felt and how they had that little hint of grit and blues throughout at all. During all that, there was a sort of elegance to it as well.
Something that lets you know these songs came from some real place and that makes all the difference in the world.
As you listen through the record, you start to get a real feel for his Inspirations and influences, which are most certainly, heavily rooted in blues music.
This album does offer some classic, vintage blues tracks with just vocals and guitars that have a sort of radio-like effect on them, so that it also carries with it a vintage tonality, as if it were recorded in the 40s.
"Big Mouth" is one of those songs, and because there was so much great feel to this and how he was able to capture this tone so well, it's one of my favorite songs on the record.
This, of course, also showcases that heavy-handed blues influence and how that is most likely why he picked up the guitar in the first place.
"Pack Your Bags" is another track that represents that same kind of feel, and the vocals vary depending on what kind of song it is and how he's laying it out, but there's a lot of heart involved.
Another one of my favorites, called "Only for You," feels more like a classic folk song than a blues-influenced one. So, you do have these different influences coming into play throughout the entire LP, which is a great reason to dive into this whole thing.
This is an artist with great experience and songwriting, performing guitar playing, and has engulfed himself in blues music deeply and passionately enough so that he's able to release music that represents the genre and himself perfectly.
The guitar performances are as good as the vocal performances, if not even better. The guitar across this release is one of the most brilliant aspects of the entire thing.
There's just as much heart in the guitar playing as there is in the vocals and that is saying something.
Check this record out as soon as you can and remember where you heard it first.
Don't forget, this is his 10th album release, don't be afraid to check out some of his other stuff too.
