An extremely fun and addictive new single from Wattmore just dropped and the reason I love it so much is because it seamlessly Blends these genres you wouldn't expect to work together and does it with such charm and strong theme in its undertone that you can't turn away from it.
"Circus Life" takes elements of garage, punk, and southern touched Americana and lets those flow into each other perfectly throughout the course of this track.
You have wailing and expansive guitars that have a certain kind of twang to them that give off the feeling of a cinematic old-western soundscape along with violins that add more depth and texture to the track along with bringing in beautiful tonalities and melodies throughout the entire thing.
Aside from that, you have acoustic guitars at its rhythm, walking bass line, driving drums that are right in the pocket but help the song really feel alive, and vocals that tell a story.
The lyrics of the song are something you end up really getting attached to because they can be so descriptive at times that you end up painting a picture in your head as the song unfolds.
This was super fun and I loved the approach to how they had this color but edginess at the same time.
This track has character. This is something you don't often get so when you come across a song with this much character you end up getting attached to it pretty fast.
You pay attention to the lyrics as they take you through this story, and as it all happens you get engulfed by the musical soundscape of everything.
There are a lot of lush textures and tones going on throughout the song and it's got these beautiful layers to it so you do get that heavily cinematic backbone but you also have such a thriving almost live performance Vibe as well.
The energy of this is perfect. It does actually feel like they recorded this track live on the floor to an extent, going back and adding overdubs later on.
Of course, I wasn't there so I'm not sure if this is how it went down but listening to the song feels like everyone involved was feeding off of each other's energies the entire time and this is also part of why it feels kind of alive and breathing in its own right.
You definitely get hooked on the chorus and how the vocal melodies and the violins follow each other a lot of the time.
This was really smart because it embeds those melodies in your brain well and when the song is over you'll find yourself humming those kinds of sections in your head relentlessly.
The only way to satiate that is to go and listen to the song again.
This was vibrant, charismatic, it had some depth to it, but it kept things a little bit loose which was fun too.
The song was a very story and character driven release and along with all the melodies and warm, cinematic, and vast tones from the instruments, you end up letting it wrap itself around you and keep you right where it wants to.
You have more awesome twangy guitars in the form of a kind of surf rock solo later on in the track and those parts really push that old western themed cinematic undertone even further.
There's just a lot going on here. It was so much fun to soak in and when you listen to it I would suggest doing so by watching the accompanying music video because it helps paint that picture as the lyrics play through.
The whole project seems like a lot of fun and these guys definitely paid a lot of attention to the details when they were recording this track but it never loses that personality or character, stories or aesthetic the entire time and these are the important aspects.
I would suggest checking this one out with headphones on because it's one of the best ways to soak it in properly and remember where you heard it first.
