A beautifully spacious and vast new single from Jo Blonde delivers a wonderful cross of this '90s pop undertone that lends a hand to certain dance mixes of the time, and a beautifully honest and almost metaphoric lyrical approach, along with synth pads that create robust and thick laid atmospheres for you to float alongside.
"Contradiction (Let Me Go)" is a very gracefully performed track. The vocals are smooth, silky, almost ethereal in a sense, and the tonality of them sort of swim around in the air that surrounds you, creating this beautifully alive and breathing soundscape that you end up grasping onto.
Part of what I love about this track is how the lyrics come through because there is a struggle, and it feels like a very personal one, but the way she puts it is very metaphoric with these gorgeous lines that have such immense impact, no matter how short they may be.
"A drug to the heart, a cigarette to the soul".
Those are the kind of things that humanize her in this track because you can feel the authenticity of where this comes from. You can sense that struggle and how it's based around wanting to get away, but being almost enticed at the same time.
There are certain aspects of existentialism lurking just beneath the surface; the wording and lyrical phrasing are brilliant and beautiful, and the whole thing is actual poetry.
It's the kind of song that cries out and feels vulnerable but very cathartic at the same time. As if it was cathartic for her to write and release.
She had to get this off her chest and the only way she knew how, was through her music. And I'm glad she did that. This is a showcase of true Artistry.
Lyrically, it's got no walls built around it and is put together and expressed with fewer boundaries than you may be used to.
That level of expression is extremely important when it comes to letting things out. Letting these inner thoughts come spilling out for all to soak in is a brave thing.
The track definitely spoke to me, as you might be able to tell.
Again, you have this 90s style sort of beat to it with an alternative undertone and these beautifully warm and expansive synth pads that float through the song's ether, creating that gorgeous aesthetic.
Our vocals are almost like an instrument themselves, adding a different texture to the song.
As the track unfolds, you do hear other vocals in the background, harmonies, these build-ups and swells that come in and out, and it's all quite brilliantly put together and constructed.
You can tell there was a lot of attention to detail in the mix and the arrangement of this track, but no matter what, it never loses this sort of personality that it begins with in the first place, and this may be the most important aspect of the entire thing.
I think it's that cry out, character, honesty, and approach that really speaks to you with this track. Those are the aspects that you end up getting attached to and the ones you don't want to let go.
It's a strangely connective song that speaks to some of the thoughts in the back of our minds or those feelings you get as you're falling asleep at night.
I love the subtle level of intensity that you can feel when the song ends and you start thinking about it all.
This was all expressed in such a wonderfully woven way, and it's the kind of song that will speak to people differently, depending on who's listening.
For me, it's both volumes, and I definitely enjoyed the journey, tonally, textually, and lyrically.
I'm paying a lot more attention to Jo Blonde from here on out and hoping I can hear more of this existential and ethereal, beautifully vast but slightly edgy songwriting approach in future works.
In the meantime, this single will certainly hold me over, and you should listen to it with headphones on, as it's one of the best ways to soak in all the layers it delivers.
You'll really get pulled into the atmosphere of the song this way.
Remember where you heard this first.
