The latest single release from After Reno delivers a very emotionally driven and almost cinematic approach and with it comes this sort of thick character which is displayed by these descriptive lyrics and inner thoughts let out into the open.
"Backlight" feels like a very personal song and to me, felt like it took some bravery because of how intricately the emotions are actually expressed and articulated into words and music.
I feel like it may have even been cathartic for the vocalist or perhaps for both of the members of this duo. But, for the listener, it can be very relatable especially if they're in a particular kind of situation.
A lot of the song has to do with the gamble of love. It is indeed a gamble, and we all know it so to have a song that's able to sort of depict that so well and do it with such robust passion and emotion.
Not only is this beautifully descriptive but the performance across the board is intense. The song itself has a cinematic sort of feel to it and a lot of the same kind of emotion actually comes through musically as well.
You have these great piano root notes that are hit giving that deep-rooted cinematic feel and acoustic guitars along with harmonica and all of these come together with more to actually create a sort of atmosphere that you end up getting sucked right into and eventually washed away with.
I found the song to be not only connective but very genuine. Listening to it makes you completely understand that it absolutely came from someplace very real and that's where the whole bravery aspect comes in.
I think it takes a lot to be able to lay this kind of thing out on the table and be so descriptive about it.
This is a perfect example of a track that's released with no walls built around it so it's very freeing when you actually pay attention.
The song is somewhat sullen and the chord progressions and even harmonica performance builds on that feel but that's part of the purpose of the song and the meaning behind it all.
Despite everything being very crisp and up close, this track boasts a certain kind of vastness and its undertone, so you end up getting wrapped up in it.
You also sort of get a sense of a live performance because it feels so personal and one-on-one that it's almost got the vibe of watching it being performed live right in front of you.
Phil Tobin and Chris Gould are the members of this Duo and project. I'm very happy that these two found each other musically because I feel like it's a match made in heaven.
After listening to this track, I took it upon myself to listen to a few others released and I'm really glad I did because on Spotify they have three singles out and each one of them does keep to that kind of staple sound that this track does, but it also shows a little bit of a different side to how they do things.
I can't help but fall for this kind of stuff because again, it's just authentic and when you listen to it, it can cause memories of your own to pop into your head.
That kind of thing to me, is very connective and you don't get it that often musically so when it comes along it's quite refreshing.
I would definitely listen to this track with headphones on so you can soak in everything that's going on and then go ahead and check out the other releases that they have because if you like this one, you're going to love the other ones as well.
Take a deep dive into this track and let it swim around in the air that surrounds you because it feels unique.
I think that's what's important here. This is music you can feel something from and that is what got me attached.
Again, have a listen and remember where you heard it first.
