A Fresh EP from BossOLa

A new EP release from BossOLa certainly delivers a unique breed of honesty as it paints certain kinds of pictures lyrically but also gives off a vast and drifting sort of indie rock and a folk approach at the same time and it's all done with this sort of character that you end up understanding a bit more by the end of the record.

The L20 EP has these kinds of layers that can be slowly but surely peeled back as you listen and while the record unfolds you begin to become more and more engulfed and the songs become more and more expansive.

I'm definitely getting some cinematic sort of vibes off some of these tracks and some emotional backbone as well because they do take you on these short musical journeys and each one feels a little bit different than the last, but you can tell they all came from someplace real or some kind of inner thought.

The guitars are clean so when I say indie rock I don't mean high volume, distorted, rocking out. I mean a softer and more subtle style of indie rock that has a progressive feel at times and a softer approach but to me, some of this is still indie rock all the same.

I definitely enjoyed that aspect of the record because there was a lot of personality that shined through and I connected with some of these songs very much.

The guitar tones were perfect and changed slightly from song to song as did the vocal style in terms of the mix especially.

For the songs that were more vast and cinematic, the vocals had a reverb effect on them to give them a distance and to give that more dreamy undertone. And it completely worked.

Other times you have jazz undertones as well and for those songs, the bass tone really helped push the vibe. There are different soundscapes throughout this record and I love that factor because there were a lot of surprises around the corners but somehow, all these songs connected with each other and were completely confluent.

There was a certain kind of warmth that came from the record as well and that definitely had to do with the tones of the vocals and the guitars along with some of the percussion and bass aesthetic that this record gives off.

This was inventive and it showed color but there were slight dark sides to it as well because it did have this edgy feel that peaked its head through every once in a while but all the same, it was a beautiful record and very well woven with a lot of thought and just genuine character.

I feel like those are the elements that help this record stand out more. A lot of times you can hear a record that gives a certain aesthetic but there's still very little character or personality to it and this record is the complete opposite.

It was refreshing and had a strange way of bending genres at free will.

This is something that helped it feel really good to listen to and I would suggest that when you do listen to this record, you listen to it in full.

Although it is, as I mentioned earlier, confluent, listening to a few songs off the record won't really give you the full spectrum of what the EP actually has to offer.

Furthermore, I would suggest listening to this record with headphones on because then you can soak in all the lyrics and the sort of lushness that comes through in the songs.

Definitely take a deep dive into this one because it has a wonderful way of swimming around in the air that surrounds you.

Remember where you heard it first.
