A gorgeous new single from Greenness brings out a very particular sort of warmth that comes through from both the tonalities of the instruments and vocals, but also in the lyrics being so descriptive and welcoming that you just get pulled right into the essence and aesthetic of the entire thing.
"Hilltop" absolutely grabs you with the little details. Lyrically, you can paint a picture in your head as the song unfolds because of how she lays that story out there so that you can almost see what's happening.
I love how there are also two sets of vocals here male and female because songwriter and singer Cess Frangi along with producer and composer Graham Pratt worked together to create this and it's like a musical match made in heaven because not only are they able to line up their vocals so incredibly well but they also just have a natural flow that the song creates and it's that flow that invites you along for the ride.
This song walks the line between what I would consider folk-pop or what some might consider folktronica, a genre that kind of blends the natural and digital instrumentation to create something that is atmospherically unique, with an indie pop underbelly.
You have acoustic and electric guitars that feed into each other and at times, bounce off of each other, creating a very lush sort of soundscape, helping push the aesthetic and even sentiment of the song, because the whole thing has that warm and heartfelt sort of approach to it.
There's also some amazing percussion going on throughout this track that does more to liven things up and give it a bit of drive.
You can hear the passion behind this project, and you can also tell that there was a lot of attention to the details when it came to the production and overall soundscape of what you're hearing, without losing the heart or personality that it began with, and that may be the most important part of it all.
It's that personality we get attached to. It's the character behind the song that pulls us in and lets us float alongside everything and eventually get washed away with it as well.
What really hits me wonderfully about this song is its loose but formulated approach. The arrangement is gorgeous, and the way the instruments are performed has a unique kind of vibrato or looseness to them, giving that sort of indie-pop undertone, all the while, you have this bright and colorful tonality that wraps itself around you and keeps you right where it wants to.
A lot of the song features both of their vocals, or it would seem so. I hear both of them singing together in perfect unison and also with that same sort of vibrato that the guitars have to them. So, you can see this whole thing was put together almost naturally.
It seems the two of these artists and songwriters have a very similar approach to the aesthetic of what they're going for, and I'm glad they found each other because it works incredibly well with this track.
Upon listening to this single, I took a bit of a deep dive into the duo's back catalog on Spotify, and there is an album released previously to the single from 2022 that is amazing.
It's called Sunrooms, and if you fall in love with "Hilltop" the way I did, then you have to hear this other album.
You can hear a bit of a progression from then until now in terms of their songwriting and some of the techniques that they use recording-wise, but this record also boasts so much heart and honesty, also paints pictures and shines light on different aspects of personality.
It's a must-hear.
Obviously, start with the single, but like I said, if you're digging it, then check out this other record because I got sucked into the atmosphere of that one too.
Take a deep dive into Greenness because you absolutely will not regret their warm, almost cinematic, emotional, honest, and tonally beautiful music.
Remember where you heard this first.
