A beautiful and almost haunting single release from Sam Butler brings out a very personal breed of honesty that lets the artist give pieces of himself throughout the track, and this is something you don't come across often, so when it happens, you can sense it.
Sam Butler is an artist that you hear once, and immediately recognize if you hear him again. He's got a very particular vocal approach, vibrato, and tone to his singing and performance that speaks volumes for him as an artist.
The latest release, "No Mountains", beckons a cinematic approach with a clean feel, but these gorgeous notes that flow through the song's ether, giving it that slight haunt I mentioned earlier, along with some of the vocals.
The track is a folk and Americana, singer-songwriter, and Country single that blends all of those attributes seamlessly to create a very unique atmosphere that you end up getting sucked into.
It's a song that comes from some genuine place. You can feel that in your bones.
There is an acoustic guitar and an amazing folk-style progression being performed on that, but there are also these lap steels or possibly pedal steels that are floating around that atmosphere. Those are the notes that give the haunt. They sort of drift and invite you in.
I love that aspect of the song because this is also what bears such a cinematic underbelly.
It adds a vastness to the track itself and in turn also pushes the emotional side of things further.
The thing about this track is that it's got a very unique progression, and there's always this certain kind of light at the end of the tunnel.
This is a track about showing appreciation for the ones you love. Showing gratitude for the ones who've helped or supported you. It's a song that shows such a beautiful side of the artist's personality, and it's very easy to pick up on.
There are some beautiful textures to this track, although it's not super lush. Only a few things are going on. Acoustic guitar, vocals, lap steel, that's all you need to get pulled into this very thick aesthetic given.
His approach lyrically is once again, wonderfully honest and open. It makes you think of someone who's traveling as a musician or for any reason, and going to different cities or towns where there are no mountains around them, and missing home.
During those thoughts, there are glimpses of appreciation and love for those who have supported him, and it's such a beautiful set of thoughts and sentiments that cross over each other.
This is the track that makes you think. You can feel that heavy-handed emotion running through its veins, and it all came through beautifully
This song speaks volumes for Sam as an artist because he's able to bring an incredible presence to the table, performing in a manner that puts you there in the moment with him. He puts you in his thoughts.
This was gorgeous, and I suggest listening to it if you're a fan of folk, Americana, or even those songs that make you feel something.
Again, there's something about this song that has a slight undertone of haunt to it. For me, that's just how I took it. That emotional value is part of the haunt, along with some of those lap steels performing throughout the song.
He's got a beautiful voice, and it's something that stays with you.
Don't just take my word for it, though, listen to this track right now and do it with headphones on so you can really hear everything I'm talking about.
This will put you in a certain place, and we'll absolutely have an effect on you.
Remember where you heard this first.
