The Violet Twilight is the solo project of multi-instrumentalist and producer Tim Butcher, based in the hills of Jiggi, NSW—just a stone’s throw from the countercultural heart of Nimbin. Blending neo-psychedelic rock, folk textures, and cinematic production, The Violet Twilight channels a sound that is at once organic and dreamlike, familiar yet unbound by genre. Tim’s lifelong relationship with music began early, with trumpet and piano before the age of ten, soon followed by a deep love for guitar. By his mid-teens in the mid-90s, he was writing and recording original songs on a 4-track cassette recorder, igniting a passion for self-produced music that continues to drive his creative process today. Over the years, his eclectic taste and hunger for learning new instruments led him into composing and producing for film, television, and radio, sharpening his ear for atmosphere and storytelling through sound. In 2023, The Violet Twilight emerged with Above the Clouds, the debut album and the first project to feature Tim’s own vocals. Since then, the project has evolved through a series of releases, each exploring new sonic territory while remaining rooted in psychedelic experimentation and organic, live instrumentation: Cicada – A shimmering EP inspired by 90s indie folk and singer-songwriters. Lunacy Indecency – A heavier, stoner-rock leaning collection. Déjà Vu –A psychedelic folk EP rich with acoustic guitar, mandolin, trumpet, and atmospheric textures. Fate Illuminate – A five-track EP that revisits the spirit of Above the Clouds with a more refined and evolved sound. At the heart of The Violet Twilight is a DIY ethos: Tim records, performs, mixes, and masters every track himself, aiming to capture the warmth and imperfection of live performance while layering vintage-inspired effects for a kaleidoscopic edge. His lyrics often take on different perspectives, embodying voices and stories outside of his own, reflecting the diverse human experiences that fuel his creativity. The Violet Twilight is less about fitting into a defined box and more about exploring the spaces between genres. With influences ranging from 90s neo-psych revival to folk traditions and cinematic soundscapes, the project continues to carve out its own unique path—immersive, expansive, and deeply personal.
