A single release from The Morning Stars brings out a wonderful crossover sound that blends classic, vintage '80s pop with New Wave, post-punk, and pop rock, all rolled into one, resulting in a very colorful sound and the aesthetic of a live performance in terms of energy.
"Can't Stand Up" comes through with a lot of influences that you can clearly hear, including some of those classics. I certainly hear plenty of Talking Heads strewn across this track, from the vocal performance to the lyrics, especially.
I love how this song unravels. It grows in excitement and intensity, going through all these great lyrical crossovers and delving into something that feels semi-existential but isn't really. It's just done in a way that makes you think.
The track kicks off with a light drum performance, giving you a bit of an indie rock vibe, and a few layers of guitars with a fuzz tone synth bass guitar sound that comes in and out. The layers of guitars are touched with a chorus effect so that they feel sort of flowing, but that's part of the essence of the track.
This is a song that flows freely, and the deeper into it you go, the more you get attached to not just the lyrics, but the aesthetic of the song and how the band gives off this culmination of indie and pop-rock textures.
The vocals are almost always harmonized. There are two vocal tracks, and they have this almost theatrical sensation to them. The way they're performed sort of grabs at you. At the beginning of the song, they are a little softer and more delicate because that's how the instrumentation is performed. Everything is sort of delicate in the beginning, and then it grows to something a bit more explosive
There are parts of the song that open up and feel widened. With these sorts of callback or background vocals that come in and out, giving you even more depth to it all.
By the time you get to the second verse, things are a little bit more wrapped up. The instruments are a little dirtier. The guitars have a little overdrive to them. The drums are performed a little harder, and the vocals are belting a little louder.
Nothing is quite as soft as that first verse was.
What's brilliant about this track is that the actual chorus of it changes.
The first chorus focuses on the aspects of life that you feel like you cannot do.
It's like a song about life itself and realizing that you can change things if you want to.
The first chorus talks about how they are sleeping, and they can't press rewind.
This kind of beckons the sentiment about life itself. Sometimes you feel like you're not awake even when you are. There are parts of life that you want to start over. You want a redo. Of course, the way we look at things, life doesn't give you those.
But there are different ways to start over. So, that last verse is really all about not being asleep anymore, waking up, pressing rewind, and starting over.
As I mentioned before, it's slightly existential but not really over the top.
The lyrics express a bit of personal struggle and realization, and it's something that hits me harder the more I listen to it.
This track comes with a wonderful music video that gives you all the lyrics, which I found perfect.
While that's happening, you have all these underwater sea elements that come into play. Beautiful shots of fish and sea life that showcase as much color as the song does, and with a beautiful elegance.
I think the video is done this way because it helps you think about what the song is trying to say. The message that it expresses is important, and it's hard for us to grasp that starting over is something that we can do in different facets of our lives.
Now, this is how I interpreted the song. Others may take it in a little differently, but for me, this is the message the song sent.
I love a song with a good message like this because it's hard to let go of.
This is a song that makes you think long after it's ended.
Of course, we've embedded the video below, and I think the first time you listen to this song should be by way of watching this video.
So put on some headphones, because it's the best way to listen to this song by far, watch this video, and listen.
See what the song's message is for you.
Remember where you heard it first.
