The latest single release from STOREBJERG pulls together such lush soundscapes and textures to build something incredibly special. The song feels fantastical both lyrically and musically as it has a unique build into something beautiful.
The song is called "Ocean City" and holds with it this strange sense of youthful wonder. I love how this song lets the artist feel okay with being displaced in a way, but knowing exactly where he's at all at the same time.
It's a beautiful sentiment, and the song has this expansive and very cinematic feel to it.
The track focuses on guitar and vocals for a bit. You have one guitar that gives you a light-hearted, bouncing sort of rhythm, clean and friendly, inviting and very warm, but wet with reverb effect so that you have that distance feel to it as well.
Another guitar comes in playing single notes behind and above that main guitar, and this adds a little bit more to that depth and even its sense of wonder.
After a short time, you start to hear strings swell in the background. Something that feels and sounds like a cello is evidence behind those guitars, and this is how the song starts, slowly building.
It crosses dream and indie-pop with elements of folk and singer-songwriter seamlessly.
Gorgeous slide guitars introduce everything, and you can really float right alongside the entire soundscape and atmosphere that this song is delivering right from the start.
It's a song about growing up in a little town by the ocean, and there are some great descriptive lyrics at times throughout this track that help you paint little pictures here and there.
Soon, the vocals get double-tracked, so you get a thicker approach. You're starting to get pulled into the lyrics even more, and before you know it, drums kick in.
This is where the song really changes and morphs into what it's going to become.
The percussion is done in a particular and unique manner that helps the song climb to its climactic point, but still has a beautiful and graceful Subtleness.
Even when the drum beat comes in full swing, those airy and floaty guitars are still evident, pulling you into that vast and sort of ambient tonality, creating this dream-like effect. This is all why it feels so fantastic and filled with wonderment to me. It's not just the lyrics; it's how the music delivers that mood that the lyrics are reflecting.
All these layers of guitars, tones, and notes are gorgeous. It really creates this wall of sonic presence, but not in a heavy way, but a dreamy one.
It's all very beautiful and comes across in an elegant manner, which is in the performances.
Now, the mix of this track is super on point, and everyone understood their mission. This is obvious because nothing is dry. The vocals, guitars, and everything else are wet with certain kinds of effects that are deep in the sound.
You have shining and reflective tones coming from those guitars, and they shimmer, which is part of the point, I think, because of the ocean. I think the sound of the guitar is, in a sense, representative of the shimmering ocean.
I love this, and I'm not sure that's what the tones were supposed to represent, of course, because I didn't write the song; however, it feels like it makes perfect sense to me.
The drifting and shimmering guitar tones feel like the drifting and shimmering waves of the ocean, and even if it wasn't meant purposely to be that way, that's how it came across to me, and that's part of the picture that was painted as the song unfolded.
I think this song meant a lot to the artist. I think he dove deep into feelings of his youth while writing this track.
As I mentioned, it's all quite graceful and beautifully done with the right kind of aesthetic the song was meant for.
You're meant to get swallowed up by this in a way. It feels good to get swallowed up by a song like this because it puts you in this again, a youthful and wondrous kind of place.
I quite enjoy songs that, but you escape into them the way this one does.
I heavily suggest listening to this one with headphones, as I normally do for any songs that have this sense of depth and tonality.
Take a swim through this track because it feels awesome to do so.
