Skinny G Radio returns with a bright new single that delves into something I think a lot of us can connect and understand, especially if we are of a certain age.
There comes a point in life where, whether or not something happens to serve as a wake-up call, we realize we need to take a break from certain aspects of life.
A lot of us, in our middle ages, don't really think about that because there's so much to get done, so much to take care of, and when these things happen, at times, we forget about ourselves.
This is a super common thing and happens to a lot of people. I've rarely heard it broken down the way it's done on this track.
I feel like this is a song that is very conscious about oneself. The realization that it's time to take a break to take care of yourself is an important one, and again, a lot of us miss it.
Will be a reminder. Don't forget about yourself. Self-care is so important, especially when you're getting a bit older.
Now, I don't mean your 70's; I mean your 30s or40s. All of a sudden you reach a certain age and things start happening to your body. Things also start happening to your mind. Amazingly, this artist has put out a track that homes in on really particular aspects about taking care of yourself.
It's all put in such a relatable sense that you can't turn away from it.
The track is called "Break Now", and it's got this beautifully lush approach to it, as the artist is joined by The Epoch House Choir.
The single boasts horns, gospel vocal tracks, and soulful performances from start to finish, and it all feels like an uprising. The song is inspirational.
You have amazing guitar parts that add different layers of texture to the song to go along with these organs that push the gospel aspect even further, and the choir vocals are really what nails that in.
That gospel-like aesthetic coming from The Epoch House Choir makes it feel almost spiritual, but even though it's not directly spiritual in nature, again, it serves as a bit of a wake-up call and a realization.
In reality, to me, the song is more about loving yourself. Don't let yourself go, don't put yourself down in a hole, and always try to find the silver lining.
There's a light at the end of the tunnel, and it is songs like this that remind us of that.
The whole track opens up with some of those guitars and pianos, the massive hook and chorus right at the start, then it sort of exhales down to just piano and vocals for some of the verses.
This lets you really start soaking in the sentiment of the song.
His performance throughout this track is just perfection. The amount of soul that's oozing from the vocals is almost intense. They are righteous and feel good to listen to. This song is colorful and boisterous.
There's a lot to chew on here. The song can swallow you right up and can also make you dance around the living room.
It is a very danceable song after all. The energy of this is completely infectious.
As I mentioned earlier, the song pretty much starts with that robust hook, so you're reeled in right from the start.
Then you're paying attention to those lyrics and the sentiment.
Now, other people going through different things might interpret the song a little bit differently than I did.
The way I explained it earlier is how I took the song. That's the way I interpreted it. A different listener may soak it in and relate to it differently than I did.
That's kind of the beauty of music in general, I guess.
For me, the sentiment was loud and clear, and I definitely took it to heart because I'm in that place.
This is almost like an anthem for those of us who are in that particular place. A place where we know we should be loving ourselves more, taking care of ourselves, and paying attention to the little things.
We all need a break, no matter who you are or what part of life you're at.
Sometimes we need a song to let us remember that.
Now, the track does have that neo-soul, gospel, pop sensibility all over it, but it's its own thing. It blends all these different genres pretty seamlessly, and it hits with such a memorable brightness and impactful approach that you want to listen to it a few times in a row.
This is the track you listen to at full volume. You'll end up singing along by the second time around, hands in the air, feeling the high-spirited aesthetic, and it delivers right from the get-go.
Skinny G Radio definitely branches out in terms of songwriting and approach. His ability to create without boundaries is pretty astounding, and the releases he puts out always speak volumes for his artistry because he puts pieces of himself into a lot of the songs.
This track is absolutely no exception to that rule, of course.
I would definitely suggest checking out some previous releases after this one, including 2024's Skinny Mini Opus, which is an awesome 14 track record and shows even more diversity in songwriting.
After listening to the single, I absolutely had to know where it was coming from.
So, while you listen to this track and hopefully others, have a read through of our interview with Geoffrey Lussier below (the man behind it all).
Remember where you heard this first.
Welcome back again!! Let's jump right into "Break, Now!"
This release was a beautifully navigated single! It had theatrical undertones and loads of honesty! Can you tell us what this song is about and why you wrote it exactly?
I spent 8 days in the hospital right before I turned 30 years old. The doctors thought I had liver cancer, but the result came from an infectious disease expert who told me it was, “the worst case of mono virus I have seen in my 35 years of practice.” The hospital stay was obviously a wakeup call for me and my health. It also happened right around the time I met the love of my life, who stayed with me in the hospital. I fell in love with her that week. We hadn’t even known each other that long, but her selflessness and care towards me opened my eyes to the kind of person she is. - I wrote ‘Break, Now!’ shortly after leaving the hospital as a reminder to focus on myself, my health and my budding relationship, instead of on my music. Ironically, this song became the catalyst for an entirely new wave of music. Funny how that happens.
This felt personal for sure! Do you find that you take cues from life experience often when it comes to music creation?
In regards to writing my own music, taking cues from life experience is the only way I know how to write. I think it keeps me honest. When I write for other people, I also enjoy hearing their life experience and making something with them that feels honest to them. I believe people often times use their life experiences to convince themselves they’re unique, but there’s a beauty in releasing a song and finding out others have experienced something similar, and can relate to it on a deeper level.
Is it hard or more cathartic for you to write and release songs that express so much personality and honesty?
This is a great question, I would say my answer is both. It is absolutely cathartic during the actual writing process. Getting your feelings onto a page and writing music that matches those feelings, is a kind of therapy for me. However, the process of actually releasing those honest feelings to the world can be scary. The more honest the lyrics are, the more it feels like a “leap of faith” to release. I think if you’re trying to push yourself as an artist or songwriter, that balance of “cathartic,” and “scary,” will never go away. Which I believe is a good thing.
Is this track part of something bigger upcoming, or a one off single?
Is there anything coming up after this release?
This song was released as a one-off single, but there is absolutely more coming. In the past year I have been writing my 3rd (and final) solo album under the stage name Skinny G Radio. I know everyone says this, but it is truly the best music I have ever made.
You did this track with The Epoch House Choir correct? How did that come about? Was it easy working with them?
I can’t say enough good things about the Epoch House Choir. What an undeniably talented group of artists. Working with them was easy and professional, and they quickly understood what I was looking for. I was interested some crowd vocals on the upcoming album, and when I stumbled across their work online I reached out immediately. ‘Break, Now!’ is not the only song on the album they’re featured on. - I also need to give a shout out to Justin Brand at NRSIX Studios, who mixed and mastered ‘Break, Now!’ He was the engineer on 12 out of the 14 songs of my last album, and we’ve grown a great working relationship together. I will sing his praises to anyone who will listen.
What would you say people can expect from this song?
My dream is that people treat this song as a summer jam. I think the song’s energetic vibe mixed with the message of “taking a break,” fits great for the moments of summertime escapism. Blasting this song in the car with the windows down on your way to starting the weekend, or playing out of a bluetooth speaker on the beach with friends. I think this song expresses the moment when someone is feeling excited to finally get to relax.
Is there anything you'd like to say to listeners?
First off, if you’re a listener of mine and you’ve read this far (other than my Mom), you’re a real one. I never really imagined I’d be getting interviewed for my work, and the fact that people are interested enough to read this much about me really blows me away. I genuinely love making music, and I wouldn’t have been able to work with a group like The Epoch House Choir without the support I’ve received from listeners over the years. I’m not someone who posts very much, and I often go dark when I’m in between releases, so I want to sincerely thank the listeners who have stayed supporting me. Being able to release music to you guys, without needing to feel the pressures of the algorithmic strategy, really means a lot to me.
Thanks so much again for coming back to us with new music! Wonderful work!
