Sandra Sutter

Sandra Sutter is an award-winning Métis recording artist, songwriter, musician, poet and filmmaker who writes, records and performs in multiple genres encompassing roots music including Native Americana, folk, country, pop, jazz, blues and rock. Influenced by artists including Parton, Robertson, Ronstadt and Cline, Sandra’s multi-genre songwriter style balances somewhere between Lovett and Mitchell. Raised in a loving non-Indigenous family, Sandra affirmed and embraced her ancestral and cultural roots later in life. Her life journey in both the non-Indigenous and Indigenous worlds has given her a unique perspective and opportunity to bring people together through her songs of reconciliation. Sandra was honoured to be one of Calgary Poet Laureate Brewster Wakefield’s TD Incubator selected artists (2023/2024) after participating in the 2023 TD Artist in Residence program at MacEwan University. In 2022 Sandra’s short film about women’s empowerment, (directed by Rob Ing and co-written with Deanna Hunter) A Woman’s Voice was released, garnering more than 40 selections and 27 awards. 2021 saw the release of ‘Storyteller’ on Vince Fontaine’s Juno nominated Code Red album, re-released by Warner Canada in June 2022, as well as a collaborative Song Book. Sandra’s 2020 release, Aurora 12 Songs for the Season, expanded on the theme of her truth and reconciliation focused 2017 release, Cluster Stars; sharing stories about the culture, history, challenges, strength, beauty and resilience of Indigenous Peoples. Recent recognition includes:  2022 - Indigenous Superstars Music Awards – Best Folk, Best Spiritual  2021 - Summer Solstice Indigenous Music Awards – Best Métis Artist/Group of the Year  2019 - Indigenous Music Awards – Best Producer/Engineer  2019 - Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women - Esquao Award (Arts)  2019 - Aboriginal Role Models of Alberta – Arts  2018 Native American Music Awards - Best Americana recording Nominations from 2018 to 2023 include the Native American Music Awards, Blues and Roots Radio, the YYC Music Awards, Indigenous Music Awards, the Indian Summer Music Festival (Milwaukee), and the Canadian Folk Music Awards. After a bit of a break, some travel and some personnel changes, Sandra is back in business touring with her music partner, Rob Ing, and performing local shows with her band, JuSTuS. Her Indigi-folk jazz fusion album, Shadow Stories, comes out this summer.
