Odd by Midnight Deliver A Vast New Single

ree

A new single release from Odd By Midnight brings up a very cool blend of approaches that mainly float around and sit under the umbrella of what I would consider to be post-punk. There are a lot of layers and textures going on in this track, but the way that it builds is borderline genius.

This is a song that grows slowly, and part of its key elements have to do with things like the bass guitar tone, the synthesizer hooks that end up floating around in your head for hours after the song has ended, and of course, the percussion. The percussion on this track is absolutely perfect because it's not super driving. It helps the song flow in a forward-moving fashion and gives a little bit of liveliness to everything, so it feels like it's breathing and Alive.

The way the track builds is amazing because you get a feel for it in the beginning, but as the song unfolds, more of those layers and textures come pouring in, and it feels really awesome to just get swallowed up by it all.

The track is called "Haunted (By You)", and its sentiment is right there in the title. This is a very relatable track for many of us because we've all experienced it.

Now, the vocals on this are also what help breed its classic and almost vintage post-punk approach, breeding that 90s underground style and aesthetic, and it's something that wraps itself around you and keeps you right where it wants to.

The whole thing has a brilliant atmosphere that it builds, and before you know it, you're just swimming through all of it.

You have a main vocal track that has slightly brooding undertones and a set of amazing melodies, performed with a certain kind of passion or heart, but still has that hint of edginess in its undertone.

Then you have backing melodies performed by a girl, and that is something that adds even more depth to the song because they're used like instruments.

The additional backing melodies are there to create that slight eeriness or cinematic backbone, and it really works because the notes and vocals bounce off of each other perfectly in these sections.

You can tell there was a lot of attention to detail paid when it comes to the arrangement and the performances of this song, along with the tones of all the instruments.

There is indeed a very specific aesthetic that was aimed for and completely nailed with this track.

Absolutely influenced by that classic post-punk style, this comes through with amazing presence and a very particular sonic approach that sort of swallows you up.

In that classic style, you have some great effects on a lot of the instruments and the vocals as well. Those main vocal tracks have a sort of in-room reverb effect on them that adds even more depth and slightly distant tonality, and this helps the song come through wet and with a sort of elegance to it.

The single does have a sort of graceful approach. It is very beautiful, and its tones and melodies are so much that you fall right into it and are invited to sort of float alongside it all.

I definitely love that aspect because you can tell that was the goal. This song was meant to be a whole different world that you can step into for a little chunk of time, and it absolutely works that way.

If you listen to the song with headphones, which is what I would suggest, you're able to really soak in all of the great textures and layers that the song delivers.

A lot is happening, and you don't always pick up on it the first time around, so if you listen to it a few times, then you really get a feel for all of those little glimpses, notes, ghost melodies, and more that are all just built into this song.

It's all quite a beautiful piece of music and something that was orchestrated very well, again, with attention to how that arrangement would unfold.

There are some great changes in progressions throughout the track, and it's actually pretty big. It's over 6 minutes in length, so it gives you time to swim through everything that's happening.

Right in the middle of the song is where you start getting these full choruses. Very lush and full-bodied with all of the layers coming together at once.

Towards the end of the track, you get additional guitar work that is overlaying, and they're single notes, but it isn't like a solo; it's just performing these additional melodies, which is what the song is all about. The song is based on layering melodies that work perfectly. They all seem to fit like puzzle pieces, which is one of the more amazing aspects of the whole thing.

Vocally, this is sort of intense in its own right. You know this is authentic because you can feel it when you listen to it. The vocal performance is a huge part of that.

After listening to this the first time, I put on some headphones and took a walk with it, and it was absolutely amazing.

This is what I would suggest for you. Pop some headphones on, go take a walk somewhere, and listen to this track because it will really sort of shape your surroundings strangely.

Either way, take a deep dive into this track because it's well worth your time, especially if you love classic post-punk and cinematic push.

Remember where you heard this first.
