Rock music does not always make much space for awe. It makes space for anger, escape, swagger, heartbreak, and volume, sure. But awe is rarer. That is part of what makes MegaDestroyer’s new single “STEAM” feel a little different. There is a palpable depth.
The Omaha trio is still working within a recognizable framework, but the impulse behind this song reaches somewhere less ordinary. “STEAM” is drawn toward curiosity, scale, and the unsettling pleasure of realizing how small we are in relation to everything around us. That is not the usual emotional vocabulary of a contemporary rock release, and it gives the song a different atmosphere, and we are digging it.
What lingers here is not just the band’s energy or strong songwriting, but the way the song reaches for something beyond itself.
There is something refreshing when a band is willing to let wonder into the room without making a spectacle of it.
MegaDestroyer hit the target here. The band's publicist said there's a lot of new music coming, and we have made a note!! Enjoy!
