Mason McNulty Drops An Addictive New Single

Mason McNulty has been dropping singles for a few years now and is best known for bringing a blend of country rock that allows the artist to put pieces of himself into his music, giving it a little bit of an intimate approach.

Those kinds of attributes are the ones that let his music feel impactful, simply because you know it's coming from an honest place, or simply from life experience in general.

2024's "Lesson of Love" delivers plenty of that unfiltered lyrical approach, while also providing a lush country aesthetic.

2025's "Dust" portrays a much heavier, grittier style, leaning into a rock approach a lot more.

There are still a lot of country overtones that bring this track into a southern or country-rock realm, but once more, he is displaying a lot of life experience and putting it out there in a way that seems unafraid, which can be quite powerful.

His new track gives you a little bit of both of those approaches and comes from quite an uncommon place, especially for Mason.

The new single is called "Sinner Like Me", and it digs into the character of Billy the Kid.

The song is written in a way that gives special attention to the emotional side of Billy the Kid. 

For those of you who don't know, Billy the Kid was a pretty legendary American outlaw and gunfighter wanted for many murders, and had a rather rough life growing up.

There have been multiple films and books released about him, and Mason McNulty was involved in a film about Billy the Kid, during which time he was approached to write a song for the film itself.

Mason decided not to focus on the bloodshed or gunfighting, but more on his relationships instead.

This not only gives the song a certain light, but it brings to attention the many sides and facets of a person in general. Just because we see one side of that person, or hear things about that person, doesn't mean that's the only facet to their nature.

A person is built up with many sides; most of the time we only see one or two of them.

Mason decides to delve into one of the sides of Billy, rarely heard about.

This is a singer-songwriter kind of track, but it's got a lot of passion. The vocals are intense at just the right times, and the song itself is loaded with melodic fortitude. There is a naturally theatrical sound to the single, as it's got a bit of depth to it, and again, some intensity that really hits hard at certain points.

It also helps when you know what the song is about ahead of time. You kind of go into it knowing that it's going to have that boisterous and almost ambient subtlety lurking just beneath the surface. It lets you know that there are layers to the song and the person he's singing about.

The song has an addictive rhythm to it and a pretty robust vocal hook that bounces around in your brain for hours after the song has ended.

The only way to satiate that is to go and listen to it again.

This is often something else that Mason gives with his music. He's always got a bit of that pop songwriting sensibility somewhere in the songs.

He knows how to make them memorable, but more importantly, he knows how to take one element and build an entire story out of it.

This release has some outstanding tones that melt into each other naturally; from acoustic guitars to vocals, all the way through to what sounds like fiddles or violas being performed.

They all fit together like puzzle pieces.

We were lucky enough to speak with Mason about not only the song but how he got into all of this in the first place.

Hey Mason! Thanks a ton for doing this! Getting right into “Sinner Like Me”; this was a rootsy track with this southern undertone and current vocals approach!

Where did the idea for this track come from?

The idea came from when I was approached by the director and DP during the filming of Billy the Kid, Blood and Legend to write a song. I really dived into what the meaning of the movie was and I decided to write about the relationship between Paulita and Billy the Kid.

Are you influenced and inspired by Country music normally?

Yes, I love country music old and new. I grew up listening to it with my parents. I also love heavy metal. My mom and I spent a lot of time traveling to Los Angeles for audition and we used to listen to a wide variety of music, 80’s, 90’s, country music, heavy metal and oldies. We used to sing along to make the time pass while we were sitting in traffic.

Did you produce the track as well?

I did not produce the track. My producer is KThrash. He has produced several of my songs.

The song was pretty cinematic! Were you around for the mixing process? How deep do you go with the post production aspects?

Thank you, I wanted the song to be cinematic. I was not around for the mixing process. I do not do any of the post production aspects. I only am involved when the song is done and they send it for approval.

Are you playing live as of right now?

I am playing live with my band live. The band is called Mason McNulty and The Burning Fields. We are always looking for new places to play. We do have a show on September 5th at the Maui Sugar Mill Saloon in Tarzana, which we are all very excited for. It is open for anyone who would like to come.

Are you already working on anything new?

I am working on an album. You will see more music being released soon. I am actually very excited for everyone to hear the songs. I think that they are all so good.

What would you say people can expect from this release?

I would say they can expect that listening to the song, they will want to watch the movie that will be released soon as well. I play Billy the Kid. It is a role that I am the most proud of.

When did you start singing?

I have been taking vocal lessons since I was around 6 or 7. I started to take it more serious about 4 years ago because I was getting auditions that required me to sing.

Anything you’d want to say to fans of the music?

I would love to say, “Thank you for all your love and support. It truly means more to me than you will ever know. You are the reason that I keep plugging away and making more music.”
