Marcus Porter Drops A Classic and Youthful New Single

The latest single from Marcus Porter delivers an impactful and honest approach to hip-hop by crossing over classic sounds with fresh approaches. This is something that not only gives me bouts of nostalgia when I listen to the track, but also makes the song come through oozing with character.
The production is straight out of the late 90s or early 2000s. It's got that classic, almost vintage undertone to it, but it does have this current style as well. Marcus seamlessly brings those elements together, so he's creating something that obviously showcases his many Inspirations and influences, but also gives things his own feel.
All in all, it's the lyrics that really give the song its personality. He's really unafraid to give pieces of himself in his music, and he articulates those lyrics so that they're super relatable.
The track is called "King of Pirates", and it's got this sort of youthful aesthetic to it. It focuses on how life throws things at you, and you go around them. You deal with whatever is coming at you, and you keep going forward. There's a particular line in this song that says something like " if plan A doesn't work out, then plan B becomes plan A".
This is just a statement showcasing how having that willpower to keep going is everything.
Keeping your eye on the prize, one day he's going to be king of pirates.
So, it does hold this sort of youthful underbelly, but it also has a maturity to it as well. He's looking forward to saying one day I'm going to be this, but meanwhile he's also talking about how he's going to get there.
He's talking about how nothing's going to hold him back, nothing's going to keep him down, and he's going to shoot straight for exactly what he wants to.
This is as personality- and character-riddled as it gets.
He's speaking to our own inner selves. This is what I mean when I say the song is connectable. It is something that we can relate to almost automatically.
We all have that thing within us that wants us to strive forward and also dream at the same time.
When you have those two things together, you feel pretty unstoppable.
You have the willpower to strive through, and you have the dream that you want to reach.
It doesn't get any better than that in terms of having the right combo.
Marcus also displays this really energetic and boisterous, robust vocal approach throughout this entire thing that just makes it infectious.
The energy is something that you actually sort of feed into when you listen to the song.
This is bright, colorful, and has this very positive but intense approach, especially in combination with his lyrical phrasing and how he changes that up throughout the song.
You can kind of tell that he's in his zone while recording. I'm not sure if he does this at a bigger studio or a home DAW setup, but the whole thing is bursting with that energy, and when you listen to it, you just feel like he's right where he needs to be at that moment.
He is actually able to put in some great emotion into the track as well. Again, it's all very sort of spirited and uplifting in a sense, but it still has that emotion in its backbone.
It's an exciting single, and again it blends this sort of old school beat and Sample in there that just make it lush and sort of full-bodied.
I also quite enjoyed the fact that it wasn't packed with loads of different vocal layers.
A lot of the time, especially with some more current-style hip-hop, you hear a lot of layers of vocals so that it sounds thicker and that there's more energy going on.
This song doesn't need that. It's got its own sort of explosive energy because of how he's laying out the track and because of how the beat feels as well.
All of it comes together and creates this big atmosphere that's sonically driving, really addictive, and feels good to listen to.
"King of Pirates" certainly displays how Marcus Porter is able to put together a single that feels inviting and how he writes music with fewer walls built around it than whatever you may be used to.
This is also a great track to introduce yourself to the artist. I strongly suggest listening to tracks like "Get Away" and "My Season", which can be found on his Spotify artist page.
If you like one track, you're going to like them all because a lot of them do display that same impactful energy.
Marcus has been dropping songs since 2019, on Spotify anyway, and there are plenty to soak in from singles to a full-length album as well.
Loads of this is incredibly fun, and I would heavily suggest taking a deep dive into that back catalog.
But again, starting with "King of Pirates" is a great way to jump in.
