An album release from Lori Williams gives off a smooth and silky, soulful approach riddled with classic and fresh jazz instrumentation, songwriting, arrangement, and most of all personality that all comes shining through giving the record a gorgeous presence to go along with the Lush soundscape that you get to soak in throughout the records course.
Here We Are is for people who adore blending elements of jazz with R&B, giving things a classic feel, utilizing certain kinds of vintage songwriting and tonalities, but bringing it all to a fresh platform and having a new spin on those genres so that the songs come through with a liveliness.
Songs like "My Romance" showcase much of Lori's artistic presence, and it's quite beautiful and very welcoming. The tones of her vocals mend and blend with the soundscapes of this classic jazz instrumentation, and all of it fits together like puzzle pieces, creating an atmosphere that sort of surrounds you.
The performances across the board are all brilliant. You have some surprises around the corners of the record, keeping you on your toes at times, and a brilliant warmth that becomes quickly infectious and engulfing.
A lot of the melodies across the songs can stick with you. At times, vocals are followed by instruments in terms of performing melodies, and in those moments, you get pulled in further. Those are the kinds of aspects that stick with you long after the record has ended.
This is a release that you need to listen to from start to finish. Listening to a few songs from this album may give you an idea of what you might expect, but it does not give you the full spectrum of what the entire album has to offer.
As I mentioned, there are some great surprises, cultural flares, robust and powerful vocals that still come across incredibly smooth and sort of milky. There is a softness to how she performs and in the tonality of her voice that really creates an inviting aesthetic.
Have to listen to a few songs you want more and more.
The piano performances on this record are absolutely perfect. Everything is done with such an outstanding knack for dynamics, and this accounts for every aspect of the release.
The percussion is attentive, inventive, classic, and helps the songs reach that smooth and natural, forward-moving flow that they need.
Lori's vocals are almost like an instrument themselves. I absolutely fell for her voice from the first track on, and again, listening to the entire record is a must-do, simply because, if you are a fan of jazz music, with soul infused throughout it, then this entire record is 100% for you.
It's amazing how some of these songs can create moods for you to get attached to.
The title track, "Here We Are", is a perfect example. You are pulled in by that piano performance, and as the song builds more and more, you find yourself swimming through that atmosphere, and it really portrays this particular kind of mood.
It's been a while since I heard a classic jazz record of this nature, and I forgot how incredibly enjoyable it was.
"Hopeless Romantic" brings out some personal attributes lyrically and gives off a heartfelt performance that you just get joy from listening to.
This is because you can hear how much Lori herself enjoys performing.
The energy across the full release is outstanding from beginning to end. It feels like this was recorded live on the floor, and everyone was just feeding off of each other's energies the entire time.
This, of course, is a classic jazz attribute, but I'm not sure how it was done. I wasn't there.
I do know that listening to this record makes you want to go see it all performed live, right in your face. You want to soak in that energy, sound, and textural bliss this gives off.
The record is incredibly spirited, showcases loads of personality and character, and just has a natural way of blending tones to create something that is memorable and almost timeless.
Don't just take my word for it, though. Have a listen to this album as soon as you can, and do so with headphones on, because, in my opinion, it's one of the best ways to soak in all of the gorgeous layers that are delivered.
The album was created with Bernhard Wiesinger, Christian Havel, Renato Chicco, Joris Dudley, and Doug Weiss, along with Lori.
Quite an impressive and amazingly skilled Ensemble that put this all together with her.
Come soak this in now, and you certainly won't be disappointed.
Remember where you heard it first.
