Kind Villain Gets A Little Personal with "Downward Spiral"

The latest single from Kind Villain hits with a familiar approach, especially in terms of its topic, as it focuses around the downfall of a relationship being inevitable, or feeling that way at any rate.

The kicker here is that he articulates his lyrics in such a way that makes it completely connective. You really understand where he's coming from, and he's really able to paint a picture and tell that story as the song unfolds.

His lyrical approach is sort of detailed. So you get a sense of what's going on in the situation and the emotion behind it, feeling almost like impending doom.

That's the part that feels so relatable. Just that element of tension under the skin, reminding you that no matter what happens, this situation is going to end. You can try to hold on, but that'll only get you so far.

The song is called "Downward Spiral", which is a perfect title for such a sentiment, of course.

That's what it feels like. It feels like the downward spiral of the entire situation, and you're sort of living it but watching it at the same time. That's where the feeling of inevitability comes in. You know where it's headed.

The artist does outstandingly at rounding all of this out. Giving you the juice of the story and again, a lot of the emotional backbone that goes along with it.

As I mentioned earlier, he can be very descriptive in terms of those lyrics, so you do get that picture painted in your mind while you're listening.

He's got such a great way of depicting the warning signs of a relationship's downfall.

This is a pop-rock single with elements of punk and even emo in there.

The guitar work is stellar and has massive sonic drive but still comes through in a colorful manner. As a matter of fact, this is a track that blends the flavorful, better coated in pop, with an edgier feel as well.

Some of those guitars are kind of heavy, giving way to alternative rock or pop-punk.

The chorus is bright. Even though the song has a bit of a dark overtone, it comes through in a very light-hearted way. He does this on purpose.

Between the lyrics and the progressions, the whole song has a bit of warmth to it. He's telling that story, and it is impacting him, but it's still very light-hearted and not taken all too seriously. None of it is over the top in terms of that emotion.

I think he's doing that on purpose. This is a pop song after all.

He's really belting out during those choruses, and it comes through with hints of aggression because he's really pushing the envelope in terms of that energy, which works amazingly for those parts of the song.

He's also excellent at creating these sort of background vocals that serve almost like callback vocals to some of the lines in the song. Those vocals harmonize and feel almost like they're taken from vintage songwriting approaches.

Throughout the song, you can definitely hear the slew of influences that inspire the artist and how he's able to pull from his life, or at least someone's life, to create songs that have impact.

This is definitely a banger of a single. It's super radio-friendly; it's a bit of a powerhouse in terms of its tone and punch, and it's incredibly catchy.

The chorus is a full-on single.

The whole thing has a killer honesty and authenticity, delivering an anthemic aesthetic that just feels huge most of the time.

As the song plays through, you can hear elements of grunge, especially in some of the drumming, plenty of that alt-rock texture, and a bit of a raw energy that is very infectious.

It's pretty awesome how this song is still so catchy even though it hits like a sucker punch to the gut emotionally.

The production is really well done; everything has a great polish to it, and the song has heart and character, which are the two main elements that you feed into when you listen to it.

You can also hear elements of a sort of 90s rock in there, which I grew up with, so I really love that aspect as well. The chorus has a bit of a radio-friendly but heavy-handed '90s rock vibe.

Take a deep dive into this track as soon as you can and crank it. I'm sure you'll get addicted pretty quickly.
