Sometimes a song comes about accidentally or when an artist is met with an unexpected now or never moment that makes the outpouring inevitable. On the day that “SUNSETTING” was written, I had decided to step away from music altogether… because after so much time grueling away the dream just felt impossible. Mid-day I received a message from a big-time music exec who had stumbled upon our previous EP and had expressed interested in working with us. We were asked to send over any unreleased demos and we agreed to — lying that we had several already done. We wrote, tracked and demo-ed scratch vocals for “Sunsetting” in about 2 hours total so we could send something. Writing this song was an immediate, unexpected breakthrough — what would I say, what would I deliver, how would I represent myself as an artist if I had one last song to write? It profoundly occurred to me in my home studio that it was never about the landing of success — the addiction to being an artist is in the joy of the chase to create. “Sunsetting” is also a metaphor for an unfinished ending, which I lyrically shaped the entire song around…It’s about a feeling you’ll never be rid of. For the “Sunsetting” music video, we teamed up with Ima Leupp (Director/DP) and Joe Hassage (Editor) again after working on “VIOLET” together. I always envisioned cinematic elements that feel like glimmers, woven in with a blend of projections and a 35mm aesthetic. The video begins with me in childlike makeup and appearance, nodding to childlike wonder. As the video progresses, my aesthetic evolves and the makeup intensifies. As the video reaches it’s peak during the bridge of the song, you see Blake and I performing half submerged in water — this is a visual metaphor for creative rebirth. This video was filmed shortly before the hardest chapter of my life (the sudden loss of both my parents) and will forever be a time capsule to a time when I was fighting so hard for mental and creative liberation. Let the ending of this video be a clean slate for me as an artist.
