Once a child prodigy, Gonçalo Serras (the composer behind Fritz Kahn and The Miracles) was introduced to the work of Dr. Fritz Kahn during his adolescence, at his father Adelino Serras's recommendation. Dr. Fritz Kahn was a renowned Jewish-German doctor and scientist who understood reality in a strictly logical way. His diagrams illustrating the human body functioning like a machine became famous. However, as a machine is inherently a closed system, Gonçalo Serras began questioning the magical dimensions of existence, contrasting an enchanted world with the certainty of a logical, scientifically shaped world. Unable to forgo logic, the concept of exploring the magical side of science emerged—along with the possibility that this magical world might exist within the predicates of logic. The project’s name is, therefore, a question: Does science hold magic? Or does magic hold science? Where do miracles fit within science, and where does science fit within miracles? From this question, or concept, came songs that harmonically contain a great deal of logic, yet in their expression—particularly vocally—embody something magical. Germinating within these logical and metaphysical dimensions, the first EP, aptly named “Fritz Kahn and The Miracles,” was released at the dawn of the 21st century. It reached the international spotlight in 2006 when it received an honorable mention in the International Songwriting Competition, the world’s largest songwriting contest, standing out among 15,000 entrants worldwide. In Portugal, his home country, he was honored with invitations to perform at major events such as the Super Bock Super Rock Festival, Casa da Música in Porto, and various venues across the country. However, this initial impact was not enough to secure a dedicated audience, and, consequently, a music career. Afterward, for several years, he devoted himself to performing in bars, mainly in Lisbon, immersing himself in the discovery of the world and himself. He traversed countless roads, paths, and detours, where he sometimes lost and found himself. Yet he survived, defying all odds and curses, ultimately deciding to return to his roots, heading back to his hometown of Entroncamento (in the interior of Portugal) to sing about what he had experienced—and, more importantly, about what he hadn’t. Aware of life’s finitude but the infinity of logic and magic, he stakes all his resources—financial and otherwise—on composing and producing the best songs he can. Since 2019, he has begun collaborating with professional musicians to arrange and perform his songs, including notable artists like Tiago Machado, Rão Kyao, Mário Delgado, and, more recently, Rúben Alves and Miguel Amado—some of the finest Portuguese musicians of today and beyond. He believes he has found peace in a question when he expected to find it in an answer.
