If you haven't yet heard the new release from Elles Bailey, then now is the time to jump on board, as the artist recently released a gorgeous record that consists of four songs, all telling stories that feel like they come from her life, and give such a fun and boisterous approach to bringing a new essence to soul, singer-songwriter, and jazz.
A lot of people would consider this either a soul or even contemporary kind of project, but it is packed to the brim with horns, guitars, lively drums, and percussion, and the whole record comes at you with a brightness and tasteful invitation that wraps around you like a hug from a loved one.
As I said in the beginning, this is a storytelling record. So much so that the title of the record is called Can't Take My Story Away.
Not only does this make perfect sense, but it stands tall amongst music you'd hear on pop radio stations everywhere. She brings to mind some of the best soul and jazz performances that I can think of.
Most of all, she spills her personality out there everywhere, and this is something that makes it special.
No matter what, you can't take her story away. No matter how hard you try, she is a force to be reckoned with, and she puts it out there, not in an aggressive manner, but just one that is spirited.
The spirit and heart of this record is really what captures the audience. For me, listening to this first song drew me right into the record and opened the door for the rest of it, amazingly.
"Better Days" is the song that follows, and this has some clean acoustic guitar work, a rhythm and blues kind of appeal and feel, but still holds to some of that contemporary tone throughout it.
Along with those guitars, being layered, jumping, and sort of bopping along, you also have organs that add a bit of thickness to the song and help build on that Soul backbone.
"Take A Step Back" is the song on this record that really brings the energy. Don't get me wrong, the energy throughout this whole thing is really relevant and impactful, but this track in particular has a bright and righteous kind of feel to it, along with an insane dance ability that gets your body moving almost right away.
The drumming on this track is outstanding and really drives the song along amazingly. It is high octane; Elles puts her voice to work throughout it, just delivering big performances, with a powerful approach.
This is probably the track that hits the hardest, and when you listen to it, you'll be able to tell exactly why. As I mentioned before, this is a very danceable song. When you listen to it, you will not be able to sit still. Your body will automatically move, and it's one of those songs that you move the couch back in the living room so you can have room to dance around.
It's incredibly fun, and although I've said it a few times now, the spirit of this song is infectious right from the start. There is almost no better word to describe this release by itself.
This is one of the things that I really dig about this record. There are no two songs that are really alike. They have the same sort of essence and tone, using big horns, organs, guitars, and more, along with great, walking bass guitar lines, and percussion that just sits perfectly.
This whole record is alive and breathing.
"Growing Roots" has a great warm feel, some excellent effects on those guitars giving it a little bit of a flavor that stands out from the rest, and a great way to end such a wonderful release.
This is definitely a record that you dive right into, and once you do that, he will quickly so again the stories, the spirit, the attitude, the soul, and loads of that charisma that she brings with her.
The release gives you plenty to rock with, and it's a damn good time doing exactly that.
Jump into this one right now and remember where you heard it first.
