One of the latest releases from Taylor-Rae delivers quite a fun and robust approach to honesty and it's done with a charm that you end up really liking throughout the song because it lets her personality shine through in different ways and you get to know her which is not something you come across very often so when I heard this track it was very welcoming for me.
"Drunk Plans" combines some of the best elements of contemporary pop, Americana, classic country, and loads of soul as well and puts them all together so that you have this character-riddled atmosphere and approach that has a certain kind of warmth to it simply because you know how honest she's being and how open she's being about it in a humorous way.
The thing about this track is it doesn't take itself all too seriously and I really enjoyed that because it makes her more human.
The whole song is relatable because of the way she puts the lyrics together and throughout it all you still get this catchy and colorful sort of country pop feel that belongs on the radio waves.
As you listen to the track you can hear different influences coming into play from classic country stuff to newer contemporary pop stuff and I feel like this is just such a beautiful and seamless combination of those elements but she's also able to take it into her own personality so it becomes more unique as well.
So, you have something that's warm and welcoming but also familiar and still refreshing at the same time.
You get classic country instrumentation throughout this song from organs to amazing guitar work all over the place. It's that live performance sort of energy and aura that really lets this song flow forward and really feel good when you listen to it.
The tones and textures that lay on top of each other throughout the song give it that flow and also add to this energy that is just so laid back and chill that you feel like those are the elements of Taylor-Rae as a person that you're getting to know in this track.
I'm a total sucker for any kind of song that gives you a big glimpse into what the artist is like as a person and this song is of course no exception whatsoever. It's beautifully done, performed with loads of smooth sort of silky soul and this also adds to that same kind of character and personality.
You can tell that Taylor-Rae has a true love for the craft of songwriting. You can tell that she's been listening to country in Americana music since she was a little girl, and you can tell that she writes music that gives you little chunks of her personality and that is something that makes this all the more special.
This release is actually what would be considered a maxi-single in the old days because it comes with a B-side if you will. A second song that follows "Drunk Plans" and shows a little bit of a different side of a personality as well.
The second track is called "Sendin' Myself To Church" and still shows that light-hearted approach but in a different way and I love this song just as much as the first because I think they go together extremely well, to be honest.
This whole release was outstanding and has plenty of heart, charisma, a little bit of vivaciousness but in a subtle way, and this smooth vocal approach that just puts you at ease when you listen to her.
With the release of such a wonderfully woven single, we wanted to have a sit-down with Taylor-Rae simply to find out where this track actually came from and what else may be happening in our musical world right now.
Here's what went down.
Buzz Slayers: Hello Taylor-Rae and thanks so much for taking some time with us!
I would love to start off with the "Drunk Plans" single. This felt like an honest country approach, and I love the sort of warmth that it emanates. Where did this song come from
exactly?
Thank you! I’m really happy with how this song came out. Going into write this song, we were just chatting about all of the plans you make with people when you’re out and it was such a funny and relatable topic for me. I’m a planner, I just can’t help it, and I think it turned into a really fun take on some of those empty plans we undoubtedly make.
Buzz Slayers: I can tell Americana and Country music are big ones for you. Can you give us some of your biggest musical influences?
I have so many influences, but I would have to say Martina Mcbride was one of my idols from the very start. She is a vocal powerhouse, and I always wanted to be able to sing like her.
As I’ve grown as an artist I’ve found influences along the way, a lot of that coming from a soul choir I was a part of. From Chris Stapleton to Whitney Houston, I’ve always loved that soulful sound and have tried to find ways to incorporate that into my own music.
Buzz Slayers: Who is in your headphones right now?
Kelsea Ballerini on repeat. I must’ve listened to her “Rolling Up The Welcome Mat” EP about 800 times haha!
Buzz Slayers: This single is quite beautiful! How long did this take you to put together and how do you feel about the outcome?
Thank you! We wrote it at the start of 2024 and went into the studio with it a few months later. The song found its own lane pretty naturally and I’m just so excited with how it turned out.
Buzz Slayers: What is your absolute favorite part about making music?
That’s a hard question because there’s something kind of magical about each step. I think watching a song go from a worktape to a full production is one of the coolest things about making music. It just gives it a whole new life and that's pretty special.
Buzz Slayers: Would you say you are more of a recording artist, or do you get a lot from performing live? Any shows coming up?
I would say playing live is something I’ve put a big focus on. I’ve always loved being a performer and for me that’s a huge part of why I do what I do! Getting to make a connection with an audience live versus through a screen is incredible.
I’ve got some shows coming up in the new year that I’ll be announcing fairly soon!
Buzz Slayers: Now that this single is out there, what's next for you as an artist?
Well, we are working up to the release of an EP that will be coming out this upcoming spring! So, there will be a lot more music and shows to come in 2025!
Buzz Slayers: What are you doing when you are not making music?
Honestly, hanging out with my family is at the top of my list of things to do. We’ve always been really tight knit, so I try my best to get home for the important moments and they’re the same for me. I feel really lucky to have them in my corner.
Buzz Slayers: Before we go, what do you want to say to fans out there?
I would say thank you for listening to my music thus far! It’s been an incredible journey and a lot of the milestone moments I’ve had in the past year would not have happened without that support. And! Keep an eye out for new music!!
Buzz Slayers: Thank you again Taylor-Rae for taking the time to talk with us!
