An Interview With Fran Pitcher

A honest and bright new pop single from Fran Pitcher brings out a refreshing approach to a dance-pop single that manages to mend subgenres together creating an atmosphere that's both danceable and addictive while keeping this unique character and persona the entire time.

"boys, we need to be better" has this heart to it that's always lurking just beneath the surface and when it peeks through you get these bursts of emotional push that make the song feel incredibly genuine and authentic.

The production on this track is outstanding as it pulls from these outside textures on genres to build something that has a unique tonality and also gives you surprises behind all of its corners.

What's more, is Fran's vocal delivery because it's got so much actual emotional drive behind it that it comes through so very passionately and this is part of what helps build on the character that he portrays in the song itself.

He's got a beautiful tone to his singing and even his lyrical phrasing has a sort of staple sound and feel to it, and packaged all together, it makes for something that is created with fewer boundaries than its predecessors which is part of why pop music these days is becoming so different.

This release has a wondrous vibrancy to it and the way the song is arranged lets it feel alive and breathing.

The song definitely becomes quickly infectious and serves as a sort of Anthem in its own right which is a wonderful thing because you don't get songs that have that feeling to them that often especially in the pop world.

What's really amazing about this track is the fact that at first, you find yourself stuck on those vocals and the things that he's saying and how he's saying them because he sings with that heart that pulls you right in along with having this wonderfully indie pop accent.

Now, what's even cooler is that as the song goes on these new things start to happen production-wise, and when the full beat kicks in it kind of takes you back and you become stuck on the track in a totally different way.

It's the combination of those two elements that really make this special.

This is the sort of song that actually has some layers that can be peeled back but if you listen to it well the first time you can catch most of it.

With the release of such a beautifully woven single, we wanted to have a sit-down with Fran Pitcher to find out what actually inspired the single and what it's about to him along with what might be coming up next to the artist.

Here's what went down.

Buzz Slayers: Okay, let's start with "Boys We Need To Be Better"! This single had such a unique production to it and was colorful but also edgy and beautifully performed! How did this release come about?

I'm quite a short space of time actually, recently I met someone who's been devastated by the effects of toxic masculinity and abuse, so I made this to try and counter these issues with men and be more of an ally to the feminist movement towards equality.

Like it's not her fault. Is us, the guys. We're the problem and we need to be accountable. We need to be better.

Also F*** Andrew Tate and his followers that guys the worst.

The edgy production is all me, like i write and produce and master all by myself - mostly laying in bed, in the garden or on a train - I guess I just put all the feeling I had towards the subject into the sound.

Believe it or not the majority of the sounds you hear apart from the drums and my voice are a female sample and some guitar.

I believe the most genuine sound it the human voice so try to incorporate as much of it into my production as possible now .

Buzz Slayers: How did this all start for you as an artist?

That's a big question. I mean I've sort of grown from being a violinist in an orchestra to becoming an electronic orchestra of my own. Learning different instruments and methods of production.

Buzz Slayers: What kind of things really inspire songs for you?

It actually used to be like heartbreak and loss. But, now it's about growth, positivity and healing. Like boys, we need to be better innit. Like this is the first track I've tried to make more a political statement instead of just whining about sadness.

Buzz Slayers: This track has some interesting approaches to it! Can you give us some of your biggest influences musically?

My main influences from when I started were like Owl City, Blink 182. Now it's more like disclosure, Fred again, SG lewis.

Like melody wise I'm defo influenced by baroque music from my youth orchestra days lol

Buzz Slayers: What are you doing when you're NOT working on music?

I'm a full-time archaeologist and you can actually catch me on time Team on YouTube digging up an Anglo Saxon cemetery haha. I also love cycling. And right now I'm writing a book called "the happy archaeologist"

Buzz Slayers: Who's in your headphones right now?

In all honesty I litro just listen to myself. Which is weird and a bit naughty but I want my production to be unique and I figure if I keep looking inward I'll find something that no one else has ever thought of.

But of course trying to keep it pop and current haha

Buzz Slayers: Are you doing any live performances right now?

Not right now - but hope to towards the end of the year. And hoping to play some festivals next year as a result of the success of this song actually. I truly believe that this has the power to make a difference to someone's lif and hope that they turn inward and try to be more progressive and grow.

Buzz Slayers: Do you record these at a big studio or do you have a home studio set-up?

I have a humble home set up. But it's all about the software and how you use it and I've been using it for like 15 years now.

Litro you can make whatever you want with a MacBook and I love that. Especially when I'm on the move doing an archaeological project in the middle of nowhere.

Buzz Slayers: What can your fans expect from you in the near future?

More music. A tonne of marketing and just more positivity and flow. More meditating and more healing energies in my music.

Although, I do have a few EPs on the hard drive about heartbreak that may get released but, no decision from the universe has been made on that one yet haha

Buzz Slayers: Before we go, what would you like to say to fans of the music?

Thanks for all the love and support you have given me! Thanks for streaming and for supporting me when I've been absent and away with the fairies. I'm a creative. It's only natural to spend 6 months away on a different journey!

Keep faith and keep listening, I hope you enjoy boys we need to be better. And if you are a boy looking to be a better man let's be better together.
