An Interview With Fat Cat Affair

A new single release from Fat Cat Affair breeds something comfortable and warm with a soulful backbone and a way of wrapping itself around you and keeping you right where it wants to.

"I Wonder" is a wonderfully woven song that paints vivid pictures in your head with detailed lyrics and a very laid-back attitude that puts forth such a great swagger that the song itself oozes with character.

The track blends some of the best elements of both jazz and funk along with that soul-pop approach that all managed to intertwine together to create an atmosphere that you don't want to leave.

There is something about this track that is almost like a little escape from your reality for a few minutes and you can step into a different world and just be there before having to snap back into your own reality again.

I think a lot of music is missing this element and it's about time this cat brought it back.

This release has hints of cinematic tonality and is something you could definitely see in a scene of a romantic comedy for example.

You also get such a great feel for the artist's persona and everything is performed with a certain level of class which is also something that has really been missing in music for a bit.

The chorus of the track is completely memorable and has a way of bouncing around in your head for hours after the song has ended which is very refreshing.

I'm a big fan of music that has something to say or tells a story even if it's a short one, as long as I can relate to it and this song has a lot of that going on.

One of my favorite things about this is the sheer fact that you can tell, this cat has a real love for his craft because that is something you can hear with every note.

The whole thing just feels like a good time and comes through with this amazing but balanced energy and colorfulness that becomes quickly addictive as a whole.

The song boasts some great riffs and a lot of the performances are done with style.

This is an excellent song for anybody that loves to hear music that not only paints a picture for you but does it in a way that makes you want to get up and dance or sing along with and with its release, we wanted to have a sit-down with this fat cat to find out where this track actually came from and what might be coming up next for the artist.

Here's what happened.

Buzz Slayers: Okay, let's start with "I Wonder"! This track has such a great riff. It is cinematic and fun with a little mystery! How did this release come about?

FAT CAT: The whole track has a poignant and sad story to it. It was written in Paris just after the death of one of our band members in Big Game Collective. The song is dedicated to her. It is a homage to one of the best singers in Paris at that time.

Buzz Slayers: This song is quite a sad story about your band member that passed away. The song seems to have a happy vibe to it though. Why is that?

FAT CAT: Olivia was full of life so I wanted to celebrate that life and her energy. We were sad but when she was on stage, she would lift up the room and fill everyone’s heart with joy. That is why the song has this vibe.

Buzz Slayers: Do you still see or play with any of the band members?

FAT CAT: Well, it’s no secret that I got on very well with Nikoli, after all, he taught me piano. I see him from time to time. As for Claude, we were friends from the start. He invited me to be in his band and we always had a musical connection. We write together all the time and “I Wonder” is the result of one of our sessions.

Buzz Slayers: Wow! The cat becomes an artist! How did this all start for you? Have you been playing instruments since you were just a kitten?

FAT CAT: Maybe you never heard the story? I was brought up in the forests of northern Europe, singing under the stars, caterwauling and meowling to the light of the moon. Music is in my bones just as water belongs in a river. I started with my voice and moved onto the guitar, which is hard with no thumbs. I developed my crazy cat beats and learnt jazz, blues, pop and funk in various places around Europe.

Buzz Slayers: What kind of things really inspire songs for you as a cat? I must know how it works for you!

FAT CAT: I’m inspired by other people’s stories. I love the wind in the trees. I love nature. I love parties and people. It’s as if nature gives me the energy and the people give me the stories.

Buzz Slayers: Why do you think you need to write about all your experiences?

FAT CAT: It is an urge. A drive. I have to do it. I see the world musically and have to express my soul through melody and song. Why do cats do anything? We just are!

Buzz Slayers: This single has some interesting approaches to it! Can you give us some of your biggest influences musically?

FAT CAT: Of course! I grew up listening to B.B. Lion King and Cat Stevens but I have loved almost every type of music I have ever heard. I have a lot of time for the old stuff, like The Animals, The Meowling Stones, blues and rock. I also love modern pop, RnB, jazz, anything with a funky beat!

Buzz Slayers: What are you doing when you're NOT working on music?

FAT CAT: I love a good nap. And right now, I have a thing for these cat snacks called ‘Dreamies’.

Buzz Slayers: Who's in your headphones right now?

FAT CAT: I am listening to Billy Meowlish. I worked with her a few years back but love what she is doing at the moment.

Buzz Slayers: Are you doing any live performances right now?

FAT CAT: We are writing and working in the studio at the moment – collaborating with a lot of cool artists. But for the future, who knows?

Buzz Slayers: Do you record these at a big studio or do you have a home studio set-up?

FAT CAT: I use a combination of home studios, bigger venues and other people’s places. Sometimes we can’t all be in one venue so we mix it up!

Buzz Slayers: What can your fans expect from you in the near future?

FAT CAT: I am going to be releasing my fifth song “Empty Bed” in September. Again, this song is a collaboration with some great musicians and is all about a big drama I was once very close to. I won’t say more. You will have to listen to the song and check out the story!

Buzz Slayers: Are there more cats like you out there?

FAT CAT: For sure there are more cats. But are there any like me? I am pretty sure I am the only Fat Cat. I will let you know if I meet another kitten that plays guitar, drums and piano!

Buzz Slayers: Before we go, what would you like to say to fans of the music?

FAT CAT: Keep grooving, keep supporting us and make sure you catch all the stories and songs by following me on your favourite channel!
