An Interview With Annissa Murad

A brand-new single from Anissa Murad brings a fresh and bold but youthful and colorful pop rock aesthetic that comes with a ton of character and a unique lyrical phrasing approach that makes the song endlessly addictive.

Soundtrack to My Life is packed with heart and touches of edginess that are all part of her staple feel and style.

The track boasts a lot of pop sensibility especially before the guitar is even come in which is really fun because when they do come in and it bursts into this pop rock anthem, it becomes something different and from there you can't wait for that chorus to come back around.

These are the things that make great singles of course. When you're waiting for a chorus to come back around or when a track grabs your attention but still manages to surprise you later on, that's really impressive and always makes for a really good pop formula.

Anissa definitely has her own vibe and swagger so to speak which also makes the song stand on its own two legs really well and the songs relatability also lets you get attached to it pretty quickly.

The whole style and feel of this song are infectious and the song has a way of sticking in your brain for hours after it's ended.

What's also pretty awesome is the accompanying music video that goes along with the single in which you can see more of her presence as an artist and when you do, you can see that she really shines.

You almost immediately want to find out more and dive into any kind of other singles she may have released previously.

I think what I love about the single most is to see a young artist paving her own way in the pop world and doing it with gusto and flavor.

We have someone that's not doing cookie cutter songs exactly. She's taking elements of things that feel familiar and comfortable and twisting them into her own take while adding different and refreshing elements.

It's just nice to see an artist that packs a bit of a punch but also has a subtle sensibility to her that makes the music work the way it does.

For Anissa it's in that delivery. The way that she performs and sings the song has such a great attitude and just makes everything cool.

With the release of such a wonderfully woven single we wanted to have a sit down with Anissa to find out where this track came from and what might be coming up next for the artist.

Here's what happened.

Buzz Slayers: Okay Annissa, let's start with "Soundtrack to My Life"! This single was youthful and catchy with a colorful feel! What is the story of the song?

“Soundtrack to my life” is a song which essentially depicts that whilst there will be inevitable highs and lows to life, you must learn to roll with the punches. The song almost depicts a way of life and accepting that the good, bad, weird, amazing and awkward all forms part of the diverse and vivid soundtrack to your life. Basically, it’s a song I wrote for myself and anybody else who wants to listen to pick us up from our lows and raise our spirits since life is too short to be down.

Buzz Slayers: How did this all start for you? When did you fall in love with music?

Well, music in my life goes back all the way to when I was 4 years old, which is when I first started to play piano. I started as being classically trained in music until my parents bought me Taylor Swift tickets one Christmas and therefore discovered the realm of pop music when I was 10 years old. By the time I was 11 I started writing some rather questionable, but I guess…sweet songs and decided it would be right to enroll myself in a competition called “Teen Star”. To my surprise I reached the final and got to play my own original song at the O2. It was a super fun and wild experience which launched me into the further pursuit of music as my dream job!

Buzz Slayers: What kind of things really inspire songs for you?

Although I can sometimes find inspirations for my songs within books and movies, I find the best inspirations come from things I have experienced/gone through in real life. The songs which are based on my real-life experiences always turn out the most credible, raw and best in my opinion!! I’ve got a couple demos of songs I’ve been writing about some recent experiences I’ve had in my life which I think are some of my best tracks and cannot wait to share them!

Buzz Slayers: This song has some great styles combinations on it! Can you give us some of your biggest influences musically?

No doubt, my biggest musical influences would be Taylor Swift and Avril Lavigne. Fun fact, “Soundtrack to My Life” was heavily inspired by Avril Lavigne since I absolutely love her pop-punk vibes! I also really love different genres of music like rap, in fact I’ve covered one of Eminem’s songs “Love the way you lie” on my YouTube channel!

Buzz Slayers: What are you doing when you're NOT working on music?

When I’m not working on music, I live my normal classic city girl life. Since I live in London there’s always so much to do, so on the weekends and on Friday nights you may find me out cruising in new restaurants with my friends or family, hanging out at the movies or getting bubble tea with my best friend and so much more!

Buzz Slayers: Who's in your headphones right now?

This may come as a surprise…but what’s in my headphones right now is actually a D12 song called “My Band”. One of my fans/members of the #AMF just made an incredible edit with the song which inspired me to listen to it…I love it now (shoutout for Zainab)!!!

Buzz Slayers: Are you doing any live performances right now?

This is one of the things I’m most burning to do! So, I’ve been planning some performances which I cannot wait to reveal on my Instagram soon…I have to say I’m really excited to play my songs for my fans live for the first time!!

Buzz Slayers: Did you record yourself or hit a big studio for this?

I actually worked with my amazing producer Britton Cameron who is based in Nashville to produce and record the song! We had a few zoom calls where we discussed the production of the song and then he helped me build a mini studio in my room. Fun fact is all the vocals were recorded in 6 hours after school in my room which I think is pretty cool! It proves that you don’t need some massive studio to produce quality music, anyone can do it anywhere!

Buzz Slayers: What can your fans expect from you in the near future?

Definitely live performances! As I mentioned earlier, live performances are top on my list to start cracking at and I cannot wait…stay tuned, I may or may not be currently preparing for my first performance…

Buzz Slayers: Before we go, what would you like to say to fans of the music?

I would like to say the biggest thank you to everyone who has decided to take an interest in my music! You guys are the OG fans, and I cannot wait to go from singing for you guys on Instagram to singing for you guys at Wembley stadium! See you soon…
