A very new single released from sister duo Simako brings out an incredibly unique and lush blending of sounds, tones, and genres by creating an atmosphere infused with an endless pop color, but incorporates all kinds of spaciousness and vibrancy.
"Who You Are" is absolutely gorgeous from start to finish and brings in vast synth pads that fill the space and start delivering that thick atmosphere along with a dreamy underbelly.
This is accompanied by some outstanding and unique, plucky guitar work that gives the song a certain kind of flair that makes it a bit vivacious, vibrant, and a little outside the box.
The vocals across the track are some of the most attractive aspects of the entire thing. They bend, sway, harmonize, and serve almost like another layer of texture for the entire track, bringing in this beautiful set of melodies that sit on top of everything else that's going on.
Again, this is a very pop-oriented single, but it blends alternative, dream, and indie-pop to create something that is completely its own, and this is an addictive attribute to the track as well as one that lets it stand out.
The fusion of pop approaches, instrumentation, and arrangement is something that makes it all strangely confluent and you get sucked into this unique atmosphere right from the very start of the track.
You also have a unique beat and percussion that feels like live drums.
There's something insanely cinematic about this track because it feels like it's got some emotional pull behind it, but it's that expansive and ambient undertone that has a particular way of wrapping itself around you and giving that cinematic feel.
The way they let the song flow is so cool because it has stripped-down parts during the first sections of verses, where it's mainly just drums and harmonizing vocals along with that beat. Then, when things open up, it's incredibly big and sonically invasive with this beautiful flow that surrounds you.
I love songs like this because they bring in these waves of intensities, and by the time you get to the second verse, you realize that it's kind of calm before the storm in a sense.
Not only an edgy tone throughout a lot of the song itself, but there are also heavier electric guitars that come wailing in and out, making it very climactic at certain points.
Lyrically, the song gets a little personal, and I feel like it focuses on how political or personal standpoints can create friction between friends or family members these days, and although this may have been a thing that's always happened, it seems to be on the forefront now more than ever.
Of course, that's just how I took the song, but I think that each individual listener will soak this in differently.
This was overall beautiful and created with fewer boundaries than the norm, but I also think that's where pop music is headed these days.
This track and duo is an outstanding example of how to bend genres to build something that has momentum, and this crisp, bright, but edgy pop approach that still comes through catchy, but you get drawn into the experimental side of things a bit more.
The combination of sounds and tones is brilliant here, and I think that's what attracted me to it the most.
As far as we can tell, this is a glimpse into an upcoming EP set to release in June. I certainly hope there's going to be more music like this on that release because it is very alluring and unconventional in terms of arrangement, sounds, and approaches.
You'll have to have a listen for yourself to see exactly what I mean.
Absolutely, go and do that, and remember where you heard this first.
