A brand-new single release from Jonathan Cronan delivers a classic mid to late 90s and even early 2000s post and indie rock soundscape with this, certain kind of attitude and vocal approach that nails the aesthetic down and gives me bouts of nostalgia while listening to it.
"Bad Dream" features deep tone vocals and guitar tones that are slightly dirty but not all the way fully distorted so it's not heavy, it's still clean but it's got an edginess to it along with these classic and sort of colorful bendy riffs that showcase the love for writing rock songs that are a little outside the box but still seems super familiar.
This song was definitely inspired by the kinds of bands from that time. Those 90s bands that you'd hear on the radio a lot like Marcy's Playground or the Toadies.
This is something that hits home for me and it's just amazing how he's able to pull that whole feel together with everything balanced from the energy levels to those guitar riffs to the vocal approach, and everything else that comes with it.
You can tell this track comes from a place of honesty for sure and that's nothing new for Jonathan in terms of how he writes his songs lyrically.
He always has a unique breed of honesty that he gives off with his music.
This atmosphere that he creates, the one that gives me the warm and fuzzies inside because I grew up listening to this stuff, is not easy to create and he does it with a certain kind of charm, especially vocally.
If you're not too familiar with the kinds of bands I'm talking about then this might not make a lot of sense to you, but I could tell you right now, if you grew up in that time, you will know exactly what I'm talking about.
There's a certain looseness to it that makes it slightly garage rock but not really. The vocals make you think of artists like Beck.
Especially when they're doubled up and singing "la la la" melodies because those are the parts that get stuck in your head.
Those are the sections that become sort of anthemic and a sign of those influences shining through at their strongest.
There's also this almost live performance sort of energy to it and that strange combination of a '90s rock, folk rock, indie rock, and more, really makes for a song that brings together that element of whimsy and a little touch of looseness but catchy, memorable, and something that doesn't take itself overly seriously which I think is important with music like this.
You can also hear the singer-songwriter in him coming out with most of his music but this one leans to a bit of an edgier tone while still being true to his staples musically.
We are pretty familiar with Jonathan Cronan and his music, and I can definitely tell you, I love the direction he's going with this track.
It brings in a different set of influences than the previous stuff did, and it works super well because it feels natural and forward moving.
I'm pretty sure that Jonathan also produces and records his own stuff along with performing everything or almost everything that you hear which is pretty impressive because he can take something that is in his head and bring it into reality in such a way that it makes you wonder how close the song turned out to the way it actually sounded in his head in the first place.
This track was warm, sort of welcoming, for me it was super nostalgic, it had this beautiful aesthetic that was completely nailed from top to bottom, and it felt like a song that I've been listening to for years and years.
This song felt like a friend. An old friend.
Check this out as soon as you get a chance and see how it affects you.
Remember where you heard it first.
