A new release from Vanity Nemesis delivers a massive Soiree of metal approaches that range from thrash, melodic, death, blackened, and more, all rolled into this one huge track that packs a massive punch and comes through so sonically driving that you can't turn away.
"The Nihilist" is the track that utilizes augmented guitar chords along with fierce riffs that are influenced by a slew of classic metal approaches and bands, but also delivers with some pounding drums and an overall approach that has a dark edginess in its underbelly.
The guitar work across this single alone is absolutely amazing. It's intense, it's got smart composition, and time signatures that are a little outside the box at times but always in the pocket.
Even the guitar tone throughout this track is spot on. It's got a heaviness on the low end and a sharpness on the high end, so that it comes through with that great fiery soundscape and tone.
One of the things I really dig about this track is the arrangement, and it's almost a progressive approach. It's not just a standard metal track. It reaches into the realms of different subgenres, and it's got just an amazingly progressive approach to performance and composition all around.
Having said that, it's an absolute banger in terms of that metal, closed-fisted, head-banging, thrashiness.
All of that is right there on the forefront, but in the background, you have a project with such amazing musicianship.
This is the thing with metal in general. A lot of people who don't listen to metal don't understand the level of devotion and practice that it takes to be able to pull off songs like this one.
These guys could go and record a jazz single if they wanted to right now.
There are loads of surprises around the corners, and again, that melodic underbelly that comes and shows face all the time, giving it in almost theatrical vastness.
There are a lot of layers to a track like this one, and a lot of changes for you to keep up with but it's all so much fun.
The bass guitar tone feels very deep and rattling, giving it even more edge, and the drumming is ridiculous.
The drumming has a force behind it that pushes the songs through the roof energy-wise, and I feel like everything draws from that energy.
Some of the changes in this track are so good. There are riffs towards the middle and end of the track that make you think of old school Metallica, for example. There's just so much that the song encompasses in terms of metal influences.
This was an intense track and an extensive one at that, spanning just over 6 minutes.
This is enough time for some great changes in the arrangement and composition, along with those amazing surprises.
The vocals are really intense, too. There are sort of classic death metal style vocals, but they're a little different.
I think they go right along with that dark, almost gothic edginess the song portrays.
By the end of the track, it reaches this big climactic feel, and you get that expansive and spacious undertone with a crew of vocals drenched in reverb effect, giving that depth you really want.
This was a killer single that was somehow able to capture this amazing energy and blend metal genres together seamlessly, which was really quite astounding.
This track really hit hard in a lot of ways, and after I checked it out, I listened to a handful of other signals released from the project, which were all outstanding.
This is the kind of heavy music that is created with fewer boundaries than the norm, and I love that about it.
Have a listen for yourself and remember where you heard it first.
