“51A” from A Farewell Device bursts out with the kind of energy that made me fall for pop punk in the first place. It’s tight and punchy, driven by palm-muted guitar riffs, hammering drums, and a bassline that keeps everything locked in place. The vocals have just enough grit to carry the weight of the hook, which is big, immediate, and dangerously singable. After a couple listens, I caught myself humming it without realizing.
There’s something undeniably youthful about the whole thing, like it belongs in the background of a midnight drive with nowhere to be. The instrumental break pulls things back just enough to let the final chorus hit harder, and when it does, it delivers the kind of cathartic punch that rewards turning the volume all the way up. It’s one of those tracks that seems to understand its urgency. I can hear the sweat of a basement show in the way the band plays it.
This isn’t just another pop punk throwaway. “51A” has conviction and a beating heart, and it has me curious to hear what they’re building toward on the full album.
