A brand-new single release from Nihiloceros brings together a flurry of high octane and sonically driving rock approaches that range from classic grunge and punk rock to alternative rock and thrash and it all comes together with one blistering track that delivers tons of character and a great balance of color and edginess.
"Martian Wisconsin" is a track that showcases this band's aggressive but fun style and it's done with an energy that feels like it was recorded live on the floor and the players involved are all just feeding off of each other the entire time which gives the track this certain kind of intensity that you rarely get on record.
There are elements about this song that bring to mind bands like Misfits and Alkaline Trio but also, they touch on that heavy-handed and hard-hitting grunge aspect as well and the guitar tones and drumming we're really recorded so well that it gives the song this super impactful electric energy.
I adore the vocal approach because it does indeed balance those sorts of softer elements at times that are focused more on melody and then when the chorus kicks in it gets a little bit more outbound and aggressive, but the entire song is incredibly lush and full-bodied with all the sweet spots that you could ask for from a thrasher like this.
You can tell that everyone involved here has an absolute love for their craft and the Brooklyn-based outfit brings together everyone's different influences when they're creating a song so you get these great pop undertones throughout the whole track, but it has that edge to it that comes through with a massive tonality.
There are a few surprises around the corners of this song and the percussion gets better and better but on top of all that, you get these sort of hooks throughout the track that end up sticking in your brain for hours or even days after the song has ended and the only way to satiate that is to listen to it again which to me, is smart songwriting but I think these guys just do that naturally.
This is a fist-in-the-air sing-along kind of track that you can head back to, sing with, or jump around the living room while you blast it out loud.
There's nothing not to love about the song and one of my favorite aspects about the whole thing is that it boasts heart so you know it came from someplace real and this whole band has an absolute love for their craft and when I say that, I don't just mean playing their instruments or singing, I mean writing songs together to put out to the world that have an impact and you can have a great time listening to.
The cross of high-level energy, aggressive but poppy undertones, and catchiness all come together and let the song thrive in this classic sort of way.
This track is a little bit nostalgic for me even because it reminds me of songs that I listened to in the 90s and early 2000s in terms of grunge or alternative rock especially.
Of course, they put their own spin on things and can put a song together that feels like it's alive and breathing in its own way.
This track is endlessly fun and upon listening to it I had to take a little bit of a deep dive into the back catalog of the band which I'm glad I did because I found a slew of releases dating back to 2017 each with its own approach showing a little bit of different sides to the band but between the singles and albums released throughout the past five or six years, you can really hear the evolution of their sound.
This for me, was incredibly fun.
I suggest starting things off by listening to this track and doing it nice and loud. Don't be afraid to turn it up because it sounds great right in your face.
Then, going back through some of their previous releases, one of them is an album called Self-Destroy Re-Destroyed that's outstanding from top to bottom.
Check this stuff out as soon as you can and remember where you heard it first.
