If you are not yet too familiar with the music of Estella Kirk, then let us introduce you to the artist in the best way possible, because she just recently dropped a new EP called Growing Pains, which has a very unique brand of honesty that expresses so much of her inner self that you can't look away.
The release brings together a brilliant combination of what I would consider to be a cinematic pop approach, along with some ethereal undertones and a commercial pop sensibility that makes everything catchy, colorful, and attentive.
What I mean by that is, she pays a lot of attention to her lyrical articulation and phrasing. She is not really too scared to jump in and tell her stories, which is probably the biggest aspect of the release you end up getting yourself attached to.
It's not often that you come across a record that boasts this level of honesty and clarity in describing certain struggles, and gives you such deep pictures of her inner workings along the way, and because of all of that, you end up relating to some of these songs and different facets.
I would consider this a cinematic pop simply because of the musical soundscape that it delivers. You have a lot of spacious and deepening tones that are created by orchestrated pads and beautifully flowing textures that invite you to float alongside the entire thing.
This was an aspect I adored simply because it helps you take everything in with the same kind of energy that you would when talking to a long-time friend.
That's the level of personality that the record gives you. It feels like sitting down with a friend that you haven't seen in a while and listening to their stories of what's been happening.
There are guitars, synths and keys, piano, and the vocal approach, which is just heartfelt but soft, subtle, a little delicate when it wants to be, but has a lot of heart attached to it.
These are the aspects of the record that really feel good when you listen to it. These are the things that let you connect with what she's singing about, and it's her presence as an artist delivering that depth in her performance that makes it all work.
The title track of the record is one of my favorites and is kind of like a ballad of sorts with some graceful and elegant vocal harmonies that come in and out, creating different levels of intensity as the song plays on.
The whole record is kind of like this. You always get these sets of intensities and these beautiful ways of building the song into a certain element of climax that you can completely understand. It's a brilliant way of letting songs feel like they're alive and breathing.
She touches on a lot of personal growth, hence the title of the record, Growing Pains, and does so with that delicate touch, but has very few walls built around it.
I found this to be an EP that you don't skip songs on and you listen to with headphones on so that you can soak in everything that it actually offers.
Have a listen to this EP as soon as you can because it is something that strikes me as impactful and very relatable to a lot of people out there.
It's a record that is about our faith and growth as a person, being a young adult in the world, and facing everything that you have to.
This is a record you breathe in and hold on to.
Have a good listen and see what it does for you. It will have an effect on you for sure.
